Like the mid-engine Corvette that gets drudged up every other year, so does the rumors that encircles Mazda with bringing out a range topping rotary supercar. With rumors ranging from the company building an 800 hp twin turbo rotary monster, to a hybrid rotary NSX competitor, there seems to always be some form of rumor about the company.

We talked about the recent set of rumors a few months ago when a Mazda executive was quoted in an Australian car magazine stating that something was definitely in the works for the company’s anniversary, but then no other sources could corroborate those claims, and Mazda has been denying the claim ever since.

Do those denials mean they are secretly building one and don’t want the world to know just yet? Who knows, but those outright dismissals haven’t stopped the rumor mill and a few designers taking a crack at what a Rotary power Mazda supercar could look like. Take for example this stunningly beautiful RX-9 designed by Alex Hodge.

Taking from Mazda’s new Kodo design language and definitely taking aspects from the Furai concept racecar the company built a few years ago, the RX-9 concept definitely looks the supercar part. With sharp angles, diamond like headlights, and a ride so low you’d stub your toe getting too close, it definitely screams supercar.

It’s hard to see why Mazda wouldn’t bring out another sports car after such a long history with the genre of cars. However, these rumors never seem to die and never seem to amount to anything but concepts and rumors. However, Mazda is set to debut a mystery car at this year’s LA Auto Show, so there may be hope.
