The Onyx Blade: Rough Crafts Gives the FZ-07 a Bullish Overhaul

If a bike or automobile brings forth thoughts of Lamborghinis, chances are its doing something right. This one, in particular, has the Reventón and the Sesto Elemento coming to mind. Taipei-based design shop Rough Crafts, under the direction of Winston Yeh, took a Yamaha FZ-07 (MT-07 elsewhere), tore it down, and built it back up with an entirely different feel.

“I think the stock MT-07 has got quite a lot of ‘design’ going on,” says Winston. “But it’s actually the frame that’s really interesting—especially the triangular tubing that the engine hangs off. That’s what I wanted to show.”

It’s true. The FZ-07 is a great-looking bike already, and one of the best new bikes that’s hit the market in the past few years. But at least one special customer didn’t want to be riding what everybody else was riding. So, he commissioned Rough Crafts to make some magic. The result is a blacked-out naked fighter named the Onyx Blade.

Some of the customizations include aluminum bodywork by OneHandMade, matte paint by Air Runner Custom Paint, firmer adjustable forks from Gear Racing, those massive fork covers up front, 17-inch Wukawa Industry wheels with Pirelli Diablo Rain tires, K&N filters, and an Akrapovič exhaust system.

Lucky for everybody, a Yamaha XSR700 is in the mix for Rough Crafts’ next builds.
