Remember that guy who’s face is on spaghetti sauce jars, bags of pop corn and salad dressing bottles? Most fans remember the Academy Award winning actor and philanthropist Paul Newman as the star of classic films like Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But did you know that Newman was also a professional race car driver for over 35 years with four national championship wins as a driver and his eight championships as an owner.

Yep, he started racing professionally at the age of 47 and continued racing cars up until his early 80s! How cool is that?

Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman is a new documentary directed by Adam Carolla and Nate Adams. Carolla is that guy from The Man Show and CarCast.

The funny man who is rarely seen without a beer in his hand teamed up with Adams to direct and produce this awesome documentary about the late great Newman’s racing life. It’s a must see for diehard racing and Paul Newman fans.

6SpeedOnline was invited to a private screening last week at Carolla’s Southern California garage/man cave and also had the pleasure of checking out his amazing collection of Maseratis and race cars.

I bet some of you didn’t know Carolla owns seven, well technically six and a half, of Newman’s own cars and even races them.

The 83 minute long documentary includes lots of classic footage of Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward as well as interviews with Robert Redford, Patrick Dempsey, Mario Andretti, Jay Leno, Robert Wagner, and more.

The most poignant scenes in the film involve his younger brother Arthur Newman who also shares those same sparkling, blue eyes. He talks about his brother’s passion for racing over his acting career and offers insight into Paul’s very private life.

During our visit to Carolla’s working garage we also had the opportunity to check out his 1968 BRE Datsun 2000 Roadster and Newman’s 650 horsepower turbo-charged, 1988 300 ZX that was custom built for that year’s Trans Am series. It was like a trip to the candy store for us.
