turbos

DK996TT,

hello,
Can you please clarify if you have the K24/18g's or 20g's?
Also, do you have upgraded throttle body, extra fuel pump, etc that would be typical
of Protomotive's package like mine or is yours just turbos and programming (or somewhere in between).
I also wondered about the 20g versus the GT30r's.
BTW for comparison sake I will give you guys top secret info that no other tuner provides:
K16 == 25lbs each
K24 == 30 lbs each
GT28 (ala Speed Gallery and GT700) == ?
K24/18g == 36-40 lbs
K24/20g == 40-45 lbs
Scott Divexxtremes GT3076R's == 52 lbs compressors (these are mine now)

trust me when I say it's not that easy.. especially if u never did one. You can't use stock headers... u chop the flanges and make new headers... but that is after u fasten sudccessfully these garrett turbos... bend all the oil and catch can return lines... run water lines, tap into the motor block... redrill the holes on the catch can so it fits the garret turbo.... do some welding.. and then make an exhaust...
For an average weekend wrencher this is far beyond realization.... But for an experienced welder/ tuner it may be doable...
Instead, for $1000 or less u upgade to 20gs and have 670 rwhp on high boost(1.5 bars).... you cant beat it. I drove the only k24/20g in existence and I was shocked. U keep ur headers and exhaust- no welding nor watercooling required.. its a direct replacement.
Sure you get more lag( 2 or 3 hundred rpms vs 18g) but when does one get on a car below 3K? I never did even when I had K16 based Hybrids...
I'm basing my opinion stricky on a cost to benefit ration since the original thread was about upgrading to 20gs...

Exhaust, headers and watercooling are needed for higher power regardless the kind of turbos you use. The word "custom" pays for itself.
That said, I wouldn't recommend GT30 on stock motor anyhow.

sorry, must have been really tired when i posted. i have 18g's. i think with the 20g's you need cams and valve train to spin the motor at least to 8000 rpms to get the full benefits of the turbos. otherwise it will be like as soon as the turbos start to hit their sweet spot, it will be time to shift. 18g's would be the better way to go with stock internals for street drivability. imo.

not true . you dont need cams nor do you need valvetrain to spin to 8 k they a run just fine with a stock motor, tha lag is tad, and i mean a tad bit more then 18 gs when they are worked . hardly noticeable

Do you have the 20gs???? I am getting them and would like feedback from someone that has/had them.... like differences vs a 18gs car??? I know there is a tad more lag or the turbos get their full power a little latter down the revs.... Are the differences vs a 18g car big, noticeable? or are they very similar cars?....

My friend is not on the forum but does have this setup in his 997TT. Here are a few videos.

50 HP on Protomotive's Dyno.

I have the 18g's. You must run race gas and 1.3 bar + to see the real sweet spot
of the 20g's. They flow 44 lbs/minute each as compared to the 18g's which flow 40 per/min.

Todd K said that the 20g's would work awsome IF u get fuel system , bigger coolers , bigger Maf....etc

20g's would pulls MUCH HARDER on top-end and the highest boost would be 1.5bar and yes no need forged internals or cams.

BTW Robert

The compressors on Anothny 997 car is same size as 16g's .
