hi guys, does the G50 transmission make that much of a difference. I've had an 83' 944, 2000 Boxster and 03' 996 (horrible car, littany of issues and 7K in repairs in 7 months after ownership and then gearbox/synchro issues). Looking at the 3.2's because the BMW's i've driven since i got rid of my 996 just don't cut it. Test drove a real nice 85 3.2 today and am now looking at an 89 3.2 later this week for 4k more. Any opinions. I don't like the look of the 964's at all.

Not that big a difference for me...cable clutch vs hydraulic....this 915 gearbox is decent. I have an 86 and love it...great car and it makes what porsche is building now..look like total crap as far as build quality. I think nothing compares to the classic lines of this era of Porsche

Well, I have a 71 track car (restoration) 78SC,83SC cab & a 88 Targa, the G50 does make a difference, and $4K isn't really out of line.

The G50 tranny is superior to the 915....I have 220K miles on my G50 in my 87 Carrerra and it's never given me a problem...the case of the transmission has never been opened. I've had problems with the hydraulic clutch on a couple of occasions, but then it needed to be serviced given the miles I put on it.

Big difference between the G50 and the 915. All new synchronizer technology, built for a lot more power (higher safety margin), and a 15-year leap in technology and design. The 89 also has a better motor (compare HP ratings) and a better HVAC system ('86+).
Definitely go for a G50 equipped 911 3.2. I've had a 1984 Targa, a 1985 Coupé and now a 1987 Coupé. The G50 makes a HUGE difference and don't doubt that! Just drive both a 915 and a G50 car and you'll know. Also, 1986 and newer cars have a better A/C system (not that it cools any better) that has much bigger vents on the dashboard. If you can spare the cash, get the Griffiths system with 2 condensers on the rear left wheel well and you'll have an A/C as cold as the new 997s. I can tell you that from experience, as I have both a 2006 Carrera S Coupé and the 1987 3.2 Carrera with the Griffiths AC. By the way, while it is true that a G50 car has about 10 hp more than a 915 car, the G50 car is little heavier due to the transmission amongst other details but the performance of both in a straight line is identical. I have taken both the 1985 Coupé and the 1987 Coupé on a straight line from a rolling start to a speed that is fast enough and both were head to head all the way.
