Question Value of a 1968 Porsche 912

Hello,

I wanted to see what everyones idea was on the value of a 68' 912. It doesn't have any rust but the topcoat of paint has been wetsanded. The car is complete with regards to parts, but the interior panels and outside trim have been unattached and are sitting inside the car. The car will start with the assist of a new battery.
Here is the deal: This car was at a bodyshop under a cover in the back of the garage for over 15 years. The owner either couldnt afford, or gave up on the project. Since the owner of the shop knew I liked Porsche's he offered it to me. To be honest I am unfamiliar with the value of such a car. It is obvious that this would be a serious restoration project. Please give me an honest estimate of value based on this cars current situation.

Thanks!

It depends on the condition , do you have pictures ? If you have all the Trim parts and Complete Engine with no rust you have a winner , according to the description is ready for paint and no body work has to be needed , I say a ballpark from $ 6000 - $ 8000 usd cause is not assembled . This cars in perfect condition are anywhere between $ 15,000 - $ 25,000 usd a good source will be : www.912registry.org

I bought mine very cheap in California in 2002 but all the work has been done in Mexico were the labor is very cheap however the price of the new trim parts and engine is very expensive like a vintage 911

Good Luck !

912 Values

Thank you for the heads up I went to that site and it had some very valuable information. The person who has the car has been eyeing up some high end reference audio gear I have and has been asking for a trade. I just wanted to see how much of my gear I have to put up on the block to make it happen. The one thing I want to be careful with is the overall cost of restoration, and time to do so. If it is rather easy to get on the road, I will keep it. If it is too much of a undertaking, maybe make it available to the 912 community. Either way I will get some photos of it ASAP and get some of your opinions on it. I'm not looking to build a museum quality piece out of it, but just make it respectable to show up at the local meets and have some fun. Plus I hear that it is not so bad on gas.

You are right the Gas Mileage is near 22 mpg if correctly tuned , however and I do not think you will have a problem in California regarding a good mechanic for the 616 original Porsche Engine (356 SC) here in Mexico it took me ages to find a good one but finally did it now is running great !!! Many mechanics use the VW specs for tuning , this kills the performance of this lithe cars !!!!

A friend just sold a cherry 68 912 for $12.5K.

How could the car you are looking at be worth more than $3K-$5K?

I went to the school of spend more money up-front and buy in mint condition...it'll save you tons of money in the long run. Let somebody else spend the cash on fixing it. The only way that it is worth buying one of the older models as a restoration project is if and only if the car is a rare example...914-6's or 911S or above that...otherwise, skip it.

He did sell it for $12.5k.
He should take some of that $12.5 and put a new lawn
