I don't think a $2-3K Miata or MR2 can hold its value to a 914 that is without serious rust issues. A 914 is still a Porsche with rich history of offering sporty and fun to drive addictive cars. A nice example still costs $12K whereas after you restore the Miata or MR2 it will not be worth $12K.

Road racing
Aerodynamics will help against the jeep. It really depends where you will be driving it more than anything. On a two lane blacktop road no Jeep is going to come out of corners as fast as you can. You slow down less before corners if at all, and accelerate your way through often passing on the exit. On constant speed free ways you can lead the packs. But if your plans are to drag from light to light, a sports car may not be for you.
When you are dicing you only have to be in front when the car behind you turns off to win. This is an easy thing to do in a middie.
