Going from 996 TT to a 930, advice?
I currently have a 65,000 mile 996 TT that has been a lot of fun over the last couple of years. But, just the other day I was following a guards red 930, and I couldn't take my eyes off her.
I found a 1986 red 930 in IL (I'm in CO) with 67,000 on the clock. Pictures online look good, interior looks clean, carfax is clean. I guess my question is, would you? I figure my car is worth just south of $40k, and I am thinking of offering $50k.
My biggest concern is that I'm giving up a lot of modern driveability and reliability. With this many miles, what can I expect to start failing? I would assume anywhere from $2k-$4k in annual maintenance, which isn't far off from my 996.
Carfax shows history going back to 2001 in NM, but then sold to WI, where I assume it was only driven in the summer (I grew up in WI/MI, so I couldn't imagine driving that car in the winter!).
Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated. Probably going to cross-post this in the 996TT forum just for kicks.

totally different animals...930 is a beast, no PS and finicky, no creature comforts
its visceral
whatever u do get 1-2 pi's from reputable people who know the 930...mistakes can be costly and require $20g+ in rebuilds

Very different cars. Creature comforts aren't like that of a 996TT. I think maintenance can get REALLY expensive if you're not a DIY kind of guy. Paying a shop to work on air cooled Porsches is an expensive proposition. I've also found that for the most part, everything on a 930 is more expensive except for perhaps an exhaust. I have both. I enjoy my 930 more; but I like the creature comforts of the 996TT more.
Different cars. The 930 is a lot more expensive to mod and maintain. Keep that in mind. Maintenance is not tied to miles on these cars. They require a regular diet.
My advice: vet the car out and make sure it has good maintenance records. Verify the history. Pay as much as you possibly can and get the best car you can. I would stick to an 87-89 if you can and get an 89 if you can afford it for the 5spd.
Good luck!
Chris.
