jzno11,
Fantastic pictures. Could you give more about the car build? Engine. Transmission. Suspension. Do you still campaign this car? TIA

Rally Car is built with all the trick stuff from Porsche Motorsport. The car raced in the US Pro Rally Championship in 1993 and 1994... it won Pikes Peak Hillclimb Open Class in 94 and finished second in the Rally Championship the same year. It has been retired ever since and I use it for high speed tours on my ranch.
It has all the Paris Dakar goods on it with the C4 lightweight transmission (short gears, 125 mph top speed) and diffs. It has a 3.8 RSR motor and a Custer built rear suspension. Full Kevlar underbody protection and tons of other mods. Its a great car to drive as you can adjust the 4 wheel drive to be more front wheel drive or more rear wheel drive from inside the car. It was not great in snow rallies but everywhere else it was a quick car. |

jzno11,
You built this car up from a standard C4 to Porsche's C4 LWT? Why was it not a great snow car? Would you elaborate on this? In any case, it looks like you've provided the car with a great home! Thanks for sharing what I see as some of the most exciting photos of a 964 in action. I'd like to tour your ranch. :-)

We had the option from Porsche Motorsport to start with a C4 lightweight but needed to be a US legal chassis for the Pro Rally Championship so it started as a US C4 and was built with all the C4 lightweight parts. When you race against the Mitsubishis and Subarus you need to make the most of 4 wheel drive. On a slippery surface like snow there is no weight on the front wheels so you dont get any of that additional help up front. Too much torque to the front wheels would cause massive understeer and too little would really just make it a rear wheel drive car. The more slippery surface the less torque I would send to the front wheels. In a snow rally, we would even use 100 to 200 pounds of weight up front to get the car to turn better.

jzno11,
So you made a transition from the 964 to a GT2? What made you bypass the AWD turbo for the GT2? My apology for all the questions. But it's great fun to learn from other's experiences.

We did not bypass the AWD Turbo. After running the C4 Rally Car at Pikes Peak in 1994 we ended up running AWD Turbos 7 times resulting in 4 Championships. Then the GT2 came along and we decided to see if we could run that at Pikes Peak. It ended up being a good car, winning its class and setting a new 2WD record at the same time. FYI, it ended up being appx. 1.2 seconds per mile slower than the AWD Turbos at Pikes Peak.
