MB AMG GT - A 911 Killer??
The almost released new MB AMG GT (which replaces the beautiful, but way overpriced SLS SMG) is supposed to be 'The New 911 Killer'....
Does anybody else think that maybe the back of the car is a little too similar to a car we all know? What's up Mercedes?? Can't think of anything new?

It's said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. If the new AMG is anything like its predecessor, it will have fantastic power and accelleration; but handling-wise not as nimble as a 991 I think.

Wow! That is crazy! I don't think I have ever seen a more blatant copy of a competitors car by a company like Mercedes. I guess BMW's new Z car will look more like a 911 as well. That is obvious forgery

Wow...at first glance I thought this was a Photoshop special. I'm a Benz guy at heart, but until they put the motor in the middle, Porsche should not be worried. Maybe they will surprise me this time.

Mercedes' 911.
The one thing it has going for it over the SLS is the 200lb weight reduction. They're aiming for ~3300lbs this time around, which is closer to 911 territory than one might expect. Overall dynamic capabilities of the car remain to be seen, though.

I'm glad someone got to posting something about this. I'm excited to see how the AMG GT will perform. I know this is a 991 forum but I'm going to try to be objective.
Looks: I think the Merc is beautiful whether or not its proportions are borrowed from the 911. 911 is timeless, of course.
Engine: Now maybe the 911 faithful will hate hearing this, but there is no substitute for an AMG V8 even in turbocharged mode. And that sound is intoxicating.
Dynamics: This is where Porsche always wins. Chances are the GT won't be as light as a 991 or handle as well. But AMGs have slowly, but surely been improving in that category. I think we may be surprised.
Transmission: This, for me, would ultimately be the deal breaker. I bought a Porsche because I still love the manual transmission. This is obviously never going to be an option on the AMG GT. Maybe one day I'll change my mind.
In regards to other competitors coming and going, I agree that the 911 is the standard by which others are measured. But remember, the NSX changed all that. It pushed every sports car, Ferrari and 911, to improve. I think it's dangerous to just assume that Porsche will always be better. I love my car and everything about it, but at some point people will want more power for the price, despite all of the car's excellence.
The AMG to me can be a potential competitor, and one that is much better than the F-type. As good as the F-type is, it's still a Jaguar with a relatively cheap interior. Jags no longer have the prestige nor the quality they once had. Mercedes, on the other hand, is a prestigious and reliable brand.
If nothing else, I hope that cars like the next 991 GTS get more than just a 20hp upgrade that's barely noticed. And I hope cars like the F-type and AMG GT keep pushing Porsche to improve more. AND I hope that Porsche continues to offer manual transmissions to maintain that niche.
