Opinions on basic 991 Turbo

So I bought a 2012 991S new in Feb 2012 which I built. Love the car, everything about it. Always thought I would keep it for at least 5 years and just replace it with the new model 911, whatever they name it.

Went to the dealer yesterday to schedule service and they had a 991 Turbo (not Turbo S) which had msrp of $153k. Not highly optioned: (from my memory) PDK, PDLS, parking sensors and reverse camera, clear tail-lights. No sport chrono, no sunroof.

They are willing to sell for $143k (roughly 7% discount). They offered to buy my 991S for 80k (my msrp was roughly $120k).

I wouldn't buy this turbo, probably just lease it. It's funny but I always wanted a turbo but now that the Turbo S is around, it seems the regular Turbo has been watered down. I also think they will do a mid model refresh soon so leasing makes more sense. Any thoughts?

Did you drive it? Thoughts? I would like the torque and acceleration better but sorely miss the sound of my c4s especially with AWE exhaust. While definitely not required, sport chrono would be on my list of desired options on a turbo. Definitely lease this one if you pull the trigger because Im sure you will lose more than the 40K you lost on the S.

530 HP is not watered down. Where are you going to use that much HP on a day to day basis realistically?

Going back to test drive this week but wanted some input before I go. I'm impulsive and would likely buy/lease it on the spot once I feel the turbos kick in lol

I've driven one. Nothing basic about the 991 Turbo. Turbo S has some benefits but the base Turbo is a monster.

Absolutely true. When I say watered down I mean the idea of a 911 Turbo vs 911 Turbo S. Jalopnik posted a funny article about how Porsche somehow made the regular 911 Turbo ****ty because of the turbo S (I can't link Jalopnik at work, but google 911 Turbo ****ty).

7% below sticker doesn't feel like a good deal if it's sitting on the lot. 2015s will be here very soon so I feel you can be a lot more aggressive with them if you are really interested.

Another thing to note is the Turbo will be less desired on the used market than a Turbo S. As you said yourself, it's watered down so it will probably depreciate more.

The reality of the fact is that all cars and 991's lose a ALOT of money on the initial hit.

Your car would retail for around 92K at a dealer and would sell for upper 80's. You could probably get like 85-6K for it selling it on your own, but the process is a pain in the butt and takes forever many times. The dealer offers advantages like CPO and trade in credit towards sales tax.

It's always tempting looking at the latest and most HP. It sounds like you have a great 991 C2S.

Maybe stick with it until the next major redesign?

2018/19?

The body style will still be current less the new mid cycle little tweaks coming up in late 2015 or 2016

Just a thought.

Or wait for the mid cycle tweaks and get a Turbo then.

The 991 turbo has been out for all of a few months and people are already saying wait for the mid model redesign?? You can chase the next model forever. If I were to buy a turbo I would get the base and look to rechip it later. At some point it wont be hard to get most of he S increase in power with some upgrades. Plus I would not not want the center locks or ceramic brakes on the S. YMMV.

watered down is a point of view honestly. the OP may be a serious tracker, and a no sunroof car may be desirable.

you can't go wrong with a Porsche 911 Turbo! btw, sports chrono (minus motor mounts and sports chrono clock) can be retrofitted

also, I'm not sure about the Turbo S being more desirable. In the past, PCCB was less desirable. I think that remains in the 997 market. In the grander scheme of things, Turbo S is more desirable, but it has more maintenance items, which CAN become a headache.

could be the same with the options - white 993 are rare. no sunroof cars are highly desirable as well.
