What the article quotes is what Porsche should do as far as HP, but they seem pretty predictable in what they do though.
I'm just not sure how I feel about them shrinking these engines and making them turbo. I'm not crazy about the turbo whizz at all. I've heard some pretty bad sounding Dyson like turbos with sounds I'm not crazy about at all.
It seems like fuel efficiency is driving the whole turbo craze. I'm not a huge mechanical guy, but the NA engine seems so pure to me.

It'll be different versions of this 4 cyl turbo with tuning set for boxter/cayman and C2/S. Just like bmw started back in late 2006 and then it was slippery turbo slope...Sad where Porsche is going with this is similar...

The turbo is legendary... I think this would be a pretty big mistake from a brand perspective -- but then again, they built an SUV and the Panamera.
I think the base car would be a lot more fun but ... I don't know. Scares me to see the destruction to the 991 resale value if they do this. The base C4S wasn't all that fast when I drove it.

Have there been issues with going aftermarket exhaust on the current Turbos? It seems like you lose that naturally aspired engine sound to whizzing and fireworks sounds.
Going Turbos across the board has me a bit nervous.

There's no "base" C4S -- that's called C4. And I can imagine vs. boss 600hp it'll be tad slower anyways

I was comparing it to the M3/M4's that I was driving on the lot that day. Ultimately I settled on getting a 2011 or 2012 Turbo S (haven't found the right one yet). I was just expecting the 911 to feel faster given it's 0-60 in 3.9 -- but after 60 it really felt like the power fell off. The M4 felt significantly faster after 60 than the C4S -- but it could have just been in my head. Personally, after my last M3 (2008 E93) having tons of problems from day #1, I was trying to avoid getting into another but just wanted to rule it out.
Sorry if I offended you. BTW, when I said base I meant non-optioned -- I realize the C4S isn't the base 911.

Interesting, I've seen multiple articles about this but all point back to the original story from by Georg Kacher from Car Magazine as the source. The move to FI isn't a surprise really but are there other sources confirming the same info around power figures?

No other sources for the power figures. That's going to be an interesting one. Seems pretty aggressive. I'm not much of an engine guy, but could they possibly add that much HP and hold the prices?

My .02
I believe they will go turbo....but not that much HP gain.
996 320hp - 997 355hp 11% gain
997 355hp - 991 400hp 12% gain
991 400hp - 991.2 ?? 12% = 450~ *this would be my guess
Myself I much prefer NA engines....this whole FI movement makes my stomach turn.
In regards to keeping up with the competition....its called the 960.
"the scuttlebutt is that Porsche’s leaning toward a flat-eight for the new car. The UK’s Autocar reports that it may feature a turbocharger for every two cylinders, in the interest of minimal lag and maximum complexity."

So I asked my sales associate at Porsche for his thoughts on the report from Car Magazine... while he obviously does not have all of the facts thought this additional perspective was interesting and may be helpful. Consistent with input from many people earlier in this thread too.
To paraphrase his response:
'The horsepower increase will not be that substantial. That is Turbo S power, the author doesn't know what they are talking about. Some of our cars are going down in displacement/cylinders (ie. Turbo 4) but that is being considered for the next gen model and not 991.2'
