Steering Column Housing Removal?

Steering Column Housing Removal?
Has anyone removed the steering column housing trim pieces before? I am looking at maybe getting leather covered top/bottom pieces to replace the plastic ones in my TTS. I was told it was just a couple TORX screws on the bottom, then they come apart.
But I have also read that you have to remove the steering wheel, which I would prefer not to do, as it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the airbag, etc, which I have been through once and do not wish to repeat.
I do not see why the steering wheel must be removed, as it turns independently of the trim pieces, of course.
Just for identification, here is a pic of the trim pieces I refer to. They enclose the steering column and stalks on the steering column.

I tried removing those covers before and bombed out.
The upper pops off, but the lower has 2 screws, behind the steering wheel.
So wheel has to come off to get to them.
If you buy the new parts, in advance, you will see where the screws are.
