My 991 Upgrades

Planned this for a while every since I picked up my new to me CPO '13 Carrera S in trade for my '14 Cayman S both in Agate Gray. Car was nicely optioned with SPASM, PDK, and a few other goodies but lacked two things specifically I'd wanted. Those were PSE and the moonroof option. Thought the car was rather sedate with the OEM regular mufflers and kinda dark inside with the standard sunroof so after a bit of research and also quite a bit of Q&A between my dealer's Master Porsche Technician, Porsche, and a few aftermarket vendors...I added:

1) OEM Porsche Moonroof retrofit
2) PSE console and vaccum tube retrofit
3) PSE programming for #2
4) Rennline Front Bumper Grilles [black]
5) OEM Porsche Center Radiator kit
6) Akrapovic Ti Catback Sport Performance Exhaust
7) MACarbon CF interior trim retrofit (dash & center console)
8) IPD 991 Pleneum
9) 991.2 GT Multifunction Steering wheel
10) 991.2 Steering wheel Airbag

All of the above except item #7 were done by my dealer service dept while I handled the CF interior retrofit myself as a DIY (took me about 30 mins over an evening beef along with re-packing my OEM silver trim). The GT4 991.2 wheel does directly bolt on and work with the 991.1 generation cars...HOWEVER the multi-function controls do no code and the dealer couldn't get the new wheel controls to recognize and activate/work on the tester. So they replaced my old OEM wheel back on the car. Options include A) obtaining the 991.2 multi-function control module and seeing if that can be installed to control the wheel and also talk to the car's as well OR B) getting either a 991.1 Sports Design wheel + MF stalk or a 991.2 GT wheel minus controls and adding the MF stalk from the 991.1. Technician is not sure if option A) will work and I am willing to try IF the 991.2 module is returnable/refundable. Otherwise its likely option B as the OEM 991.1 MF wheel is just an eyesore to me. Not attractive at all. My old 981 Cayman S was ordered with the Sports Design wheel for a reason! If so will just sell the 991.2 MF wheel and airbag since they were special order items.

Must say MACarbon's quality and service was outstanding! Even included a tool kit to remove the parts and a CF cleaning kit also. Top notch parts and quality for all. My AZ dealer did a great job on the car and I was pleased with the result and even the overall cost...until the car was hit by an SUV driver 3 days later during a trip to Las Vegas while leaving a casino parking garage...but that's another story and post. Didn't get to take many pics post upgrade for you guys due to the trip then accident [vehicle is now at the body shop] but will do so when I get it back out of the body shop...hopefully soon.

Cobb Accessport v3 coming up next. Maybe swap back to Carrera S Satin Platinum wheels from my current 20" ones. I had them on my previous '14 Cayman S and loved them. That was a great car!

I'm in the same position as you re steering wheels. Think I may abandon multifunctionality and just get the 991.1 Sportdesign. It is a lovely wheel. Other option is a Techart conversion of the existing MF wheel, but I fear it may be, to coin a phrase, like putting lipstick on a pig.

How does the Akra exhaust sound, and have you noticed any power gains?

combatninja has a little shameless behaviour in the past
What made you buy a 2013 S and modify it rather than just getting, say, a CPO GTS with a sunroof? Serious question.

Thanks. I may have to add some HRE's at some point...wish the FF-101s I got on my M3 would transfer over.

Exhaust sounds great. Just as I knew it would be and comparable to almost every clip out there I had viewed. Improves the car with a deeper and exotic tone that isn't too harsh or obnoxiously loud. Best of the bunch. Thumbs up!!!

Okay easy to answer. 1) a GTS wasn't available at my dealer, 2) wasn't really looking for a 991 at all as I had an '14 981S that I had ordered to my specs and loved/enjoyed. Only when my sales guy took me out in a '15 991 C4S that they had discounted by about $20k did I show any thought to trading up. That car sold the next day but he had just gotten in a 2013 C2S on lease back that was the exact same color as my Cayman S both interior/exterior and optioned how I would have gotten the car other then PSE and moon-roof. So the ran some numbers and made me a deal that had me out the door with no money out of my pocket, 6 yr/100k CPO warranty, free services, clear bra, and a few other nice throw ins that made it an easy swap over for about $125 more a month. So was a no brainier to me especially since I was coming from a hx of owning a 996, 997.1 and two 997.2 among others. So it made sense. Upgrades were just to get it where I wanted it for my own benefit and enjoyment.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the compliments. Am bidding my time on wheels at this moment. Just not sure what I want/like for the car and OEM 20" Carrera wheels are good to go for now. Loved the Porsche Platinum Satin 20" Carrera S wheels on my Cayman S and may go back that route as they do match the color [Agate Grey] so well. Until then I am good for now. Thanks

$2k from Porsche. Its OEM part same as what comes with the moon-roof option when chosen from the factory.

Mind sharing what the dealer charged you for labor to install the center radiator? Nifty upgrade!
