Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom to remove a stock 6-speed shift knob from a '98 993? I removed the center console to release the leather boot from under the console so that I could get to the knob on the metal shifter. There is no allen screw or fastening bolt securing the knob to the shift lever so I assume the knob is simply press fitted down onto the shifter. But try as I might I can't get the knob up and off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You don't have to remove the center console to get the boot out, all you have to do is just push down on the boot at the edges of it, and it will pop down and out of the clips. Once all sides are loose, then you can turn the base slightly and pull it out of the console. IIRC the 993 is just a press fit, so then you just pull up hard on the shift knob to remove it....sometimes is just takes a good long hard pull before it will let go and release. Shouldn't take more than a minute to remove start to finish.
I usually use a screw driver with a towel around the end and press down on the left inside part of the boot. It will release and you just pull up on the knob but make sure your head is not in the way.....ask me how I know.....
