Porsche charger fried my battery.

I bought the Porsche battery maintainer and had it on my car for about 2 months, and last week, the car started to smell really bad. I assumed it was the battery and unhooked the charger. The smell went away but now my battery is toast; barely any charge. Do you guys think there could be a bigger problem here, or simply replace the battery?

Do you guys recommend an after-market battery or Porsche OE?

Thanks,

-Awais

I just put a battery charger on my car for about 4 - 8 hours once a week. I do not like the battery tenders.

Westwood is on a distinguished road
I have had the old Porsche tender on my last two cars and it is on from November 1st until probably late March with no problem. I wonder if your battery just died and overloaded the tender? May have fried it?

But, like everyone else says, do not put another Porsche Battery in it! There are much stronger batterys for the money.

you have a defective Porsche charger (I guess). I leave mine connected
to my car *all the time* except when driving on weekends. My first
(OEM) battery lasted 5 years because of that care. Don't get the OEM
battery to replace. It's expensive and not as good. A top-of-the-line
Sears is a good standard choice with a good guaranty. If you want to
go fancy you could go with one of the Optima types.
However, the key is that if you have good battery tender, keep it connected
whenever possible and your battery will last a *long* time.
Joe

Ditto, have OEM Charger (Silver) and have had it on my Porsches for years, and have Sears Big Battery.

Since I purchased my X50, I've had little desire to drive my M3.

So, I've had the Porsche battery maintainer hooked up to my M3 for the last year straight and I have not had a problem. I have only driven it 3-4 times in that period of time too....so the charger has seen heavy use.

The M3 has an Optima Red Top battery in it, and the car is always charged and ready to go.

So what battery do you guys recommend? And can I buy it from Napa auto part or similar store? It's sunny today and I'd love to hook up a new battery and take the car out for a spin

I just registered over at Renntech to read that thread on batteries. They're recommending the Group 48 from Autozone.

What's the deal with the vent tube? Where does it vent to?

I purchased an OEM charger and it worked great on my 2003 Cab and my new Turbo.

I plug this in to the cigarette lighter (sorry, not PC,, the auxillary 12 volt source) every time I get home with the car.

To me its a cheap way to maintain the battery which seems to last a long time.

I got a Porsche charger/maintaner from suncoast about 6 month ago. So for no problems with an interstate "small" battery.
