I believe the motor can run lean for any number of reasons, such as clogged fuel line or clogged injectors, faulty 02 sensor telling the ECU to lean things out, maybe even a clogged fuel filter, worn/weak fuel pump, etc.

The software is responsible for the car's AFR. Therefore he couldn't "drive it too lean" without it being the software's fault.
under stock conditions its all fine and dandy.... but when you have upgraded turbos with a flash running more boost, the ecu cannot come up with more fuel if the hardware is not allowing it... therefore the ecu has nothing to do with it except pull timing...

I know a proto car as well that we thought blew a gasket... too much boost with low octane fuel..... yet the final result was a failed Piston that had nothing to do with the tuning...
BTW, I recall your car had a Upsolute in it before you swithced over to proto... not sure if you bought it that way or not...

yep, i later learned that after Todd mentioned it to me and doing some digging in the archives on the previous owner.
way too many variables to blame someone... to the OP and anyone modding their car, i suggest:
- keep a $15k budget for the rainy day
- find a tuner local to you that can help you on that rainy day

It was the valve from the third cilinder that melted and I don't like to blame someone but Upsolute doesn't even answer my emails so I suppose they know they did something wrong...

I really think it was a hardware failure and no matter what ecu was in it it would fail.... just my opinion....
On the other hand, it doesnt have good reputation in the US.

Sorry, but your assumption is just that ... an assumption....
I agree that a $700 program is not something I would EVER put in my car...
But to assume it's the ECu is somewhat farfetched.
Maybe yo drove too hard, too lean ... for too long.... maybe you had too much boost etc.... anything can happen... for any number of reasons....

i agree here... ive had people ask me about Upsolute tunes in their cars, and i have always been skeptical about them, even in my Audi my tune cost $1200, put on the dyno, and drove around for 30 min to have the program tuned to my mods and etc.
i also agree that it probably had something to do with more than just the ecu.. could be a multitude of problems
That sucks to hear man, but it's one of the hazards you sign up for when modifying a car. Otherwise that's what the warranty is for. As Markski said, it could have been a vacuum connection came loose, bad gas, stuck actuator, anything.
I've blown engines before on DSMs - one a ring land from running too lean (30lbs through a clipped big 16G even on an 044 pump will do that, lol), and the other a freak timing belt mishap. Each time it sucked (however the cost was nowhere near a P-car), but the knowledge gained from rebuilding each stronger than new more than offset the initial pain.
[quote=dixie;1992932]Hello,I want to warn all upsolute drivers because their program melted my exhaust valve,I asked a lot of people what could cause this and they all tell me it is the programming,I already have all my injectors tested and they were fine,I also contacted Upsolute and they asked me what program I was running from them but after that they won't answer my emails
I only drove about 8000 miles with their flash and I have K16/24 so they wrote the program espessially for my car, boost was set at 1.1 bar.
So all I can do is warn you to get rid off Upsolute..
Hi.. Did you have your gas tested to see what the ture octane was? The ECU will only pull so much timing. What does the piston look like? Or the plugs for that matter. Any hoo sorry to hear about it.. Tim

I always drive with Esso 98 RON fuel ,plugs looked fine and the piston looked like new because it was cleaned with unburned fuel, maybe it's normal but my exhaust valves all looked very black. What botters me most is that I asked Upsolute's opinion what could have caused this but they don't answer my emails..
When my car was k16 I tried a file from upsolute...The car was not good and limp mode was there everyday...i send back the ecu to correct the file and they lowered the pressure so the difference from stock was about 0.1bar(0.7 to0.8)i was not happy with that,of course...Anyway I went to another company and since then everything runs fine...However they did not charge me anything because i shipped the ecu from another country, and they wanted me first to be happy with the results and then charge my credit card...So in the end at least they are not liars...they just could not create a file working ok for my car...

Given the recent price drops by some vendors....I would seriously think about the new playing field. Cars are out of warranty, engines are expensive....I'd go with a vendor that is "good"...
