Water injection testing on the 996tt : Complete.

What is water injection?

Water injection is the process of spraying a fine mist of water and possibly a mix of other mediums directly into the combustion process. This can take place directly in to an intercooler pipe or directly into the intake manifold. This mist absorbs and displaces heat caused by the compression of air through a turbo system.

Please do not confuse this process with spraying water on the external surface of intercoolers. Fine mist of water is actually entering your combustion chamber.

Advantages of water injection:

-Significantly lower intake air temperatures
-Lower egt’s
-Reduced risk of detonation
-Reduction in ecu timing retard
-Increased octane (when used with methanol)
-Reduced carbon build up in cylinder
-Ability to safely run more boost on pump gas
-Ability to advance timing further then pump gas alone

The Test Car:

2001 996tt
Cargraphics Exhaust
Forge Diverter Valves
EPL Flash

The Install:

The install of each system can be tailored specifically to customer specification and needs. In the case of this car, we used a 6 quart tank mounted in the front of the car, the pump was mounted in the spare tire well and lines were run through factory grommets to the engine compartment. This install caused the owner to loose less then 1 cubic feet of storage space and will not effect the day to day use of his storage compartment.

Jet Placement

Tank Location (this pic taken before wiring was neatly tucked away)

Test Data:

Intake air temperature:
Notes : This graph displays data from a back to back 3rd gear pull. Notice the reduction of temperature during the 2nd dyno pull with the water injection switched on.

Water Injection on – Delta Change of temperature -3.7c

Water Injection off – Delta Change of temperature +13.5c

Ignition timing:
Notes : This graph displays data from a back to back 3rd gear pull.

Water Injection off
– Notice the different in timing advance at 3000-3300, 5000-6800. This is due to the ecu pulling timing based on knock sensor activity. This happens on most if not all tuned 996’s.

Water Injection on – Notice smoothness of the timing curve with the water injection system active. The ecu did not retard timing nearly as much as with the system deactivated. This is VERY similar to what you would expect to see if the car was running race gas. This additional ignition advance will greatly increase horsepower and smooth power delivery.

Dyno:

Green Graph – Basic off the shelf EPL k16 flash optimized for 93 octane.
Red Graph – Newly released off the shelf EPL k16 water injection file optimized for use with 93/92 octane and water injection.

Gains :

-25+ horse power and 30+ foot pounds of torque through much of the power band.
-As much as 40+ horsepower gains in some areas.
-Much broader power delivery.
-Better throttle response.

Conclusion:

When a high quality water injection system is installed and tuned correctly, it will increases both power and safety in the 996tt application. The benefits of lowering intake air temps even beyond what upgraded intercoolers can do and increasing octane to your a/f mixture are just 2 of many advantages of installing a system like this.

EPL recommends the Aquamist HSF-1 or HSF-5 kit. Specific 996tt kits are available from EPL. Please email or PM for more information.

Good question. I should have specified. This was 50% water 50% VP m1 methanol.

We would have seen nearly the same results with windshield wiper fluid. Most windshield wiper fluid is 30% meth or more.

Will this solve the heat issue you find inherent with the 20G wheels being used?

It would be a band-aid fix....but yes it absolutely would.

Would the gains be additional if race gas is used?

Great write-up Tony. Very cool.

I have a water-injection kit that came with my procharged small block Chevy and cannot wait to get that running!

Great data and documentation.

I'd like to see this on a 700 HP car.

A car with just a chip might not mean much. How much of a delta will you get on a high HP application.

I know that PorschePHD, ImagineAuto, built a very nice Aquamist system about three or four years back and then we never heard about it and nobody ever used it again. I'm not sure what the reasons were. I was ready to do this then.

The Aquamist pumps that were available a few years back weren't adequate for high horse power applications. This system set up and tuned properly on a high horsepower 996 would be fantastic!

For what its worth, in most cases a k16 at 1 bar will produce more heat then a k24/18g at 1 bar.....delta change would most likely be nearly the same or even more idel!

Nice job, Tony. I'm very glad to see someone finally apply this to P-cars.

.

We've had a couple 996's running for a while, but no one has been able to leave their cars with us long enough for proper testing.

I personally will never own another force induction car without water injection. I actually have a kit on the way for my cayman.... Lets see what we can do on an NA car!
