Question What should I do with the stocker CD player & CD holder?

While I will spend this weekend stopping by local audio shops to swap out the stock CD player with an aftermarket unit, at least allowing me to play MP3 CD since the OEM CD player + changer can't play my CD-R consistently...without any ipod adapter option, I need at least a CD player that processes MP3 CDs.

Anyway, not sure if I will hit any technical challenges there as I haven't bothered replacing OEM audio unit with aftermarket for such a long time, especially new on a Porsche. Putting that on the side...if the above is accomplished, my next target is the best invention of all time, CD holder. That thing has to go.

Any suggestions of what can be fitted in this area? Boost gauge? If you can please provide your suggestion + links to buy + level of install difficulty.

Really appreciate and thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers.

Since your car is an 03, I believe it has the MOST fibre optics wiring in it...you may want to check with some folks about how much hassle it is dealing with the wiring on a MOST wired car. I don't know if it presents major problems....jsut that I have seen references to the MOST issue before.

Just a suggestion before you get too far into it.

There are definitely tons of posts about this. There is fiber optic BETWEEN the amp and stereo. If you replace one, you have to replace the other and run normal "RCA" type cables to connect them. I also have an 03 and I am currently doing some work on my car that requires me to remove some interior panels and there IS regular wire going to the speakers. Do a search here...

The Head unit talks to the CD Changer via fiber optic too. A 'regular' CD changer just won't work.

I will not need a CD changer anymore if I am able to change the head unit. 1 mp3 CD can do it all. I don't plan to get a new head unit and have it connecting back to the stock CD changer.

Just went through this. But it wasn't an issue as I replaced the amps as well. The wiring from amps to speakers is regular copper so it can be reused.

Hi j.mitchell,

Since you are in the Bay Area, which shop did you go to? And was this "operation" major? Just want to watch out if the audio shop would try to screw me on installation fees.

Thanks.

OK, I stopped by a few audio shops, including BestBuy, over the weekend just to understand what my options are. Reporting back to here in case anyone is in a similar situation as I am.

Anyway, either the fact that these guys see me rolling in in a Porsche or that is the cold truth, it will not be as simple as replacing the head CD player. Thus far, it is common to get that this will be quite an operation where basically everything relating to the audio system will need to be replaced...head unit, amp, speakers, wiring...

I have quotes from $3k-5k. Thus, I do fancy that 7" touchscreen setup, and move the A/C controls down to get rid of the useless CD holder, I rather live with the stock Audio system (which I think the Bose speakers are fine) and take those $$ to SharkWerks and get some real gain.

I don't see anything wrong with your logic...spending $5K on a sound system versus putting that same money into a flash, upgraded exhaust system, wastegates etc is a lot better use of hard earned money than trying to replace the MOST system. After all, the sound of a well tuned car with performance upgrades and a great sounding exhaust is much more pleasing than a stero system...especially in a Porsche.

I agree that your probably going down the right road now, but I think they were trying to hose you. I have an 03 with the Bose and I have regular wiring going to my speakers. There have been many threads here about this. You only have to replace the head unit, amp and wiring between the two only.

OK, good to know. Why do these guys just think that Porsche owners have loads of $$ ready to pass out stimulating the economy?!

Anyway, I think I will take the performance route for now. Not very keen to even spend $1-2k on audio system right now.

Eject the holders so the doors are hanging out, then give them a good tug as one unit. It takes almost a whole second.

Seth - thanks it worked. I have another question, can I remove the CD holders from the face plate? I want to use just the face plate (with the opening) to install a XM radio - if not - do you have any idea on where I can get a face plate that fits into that cubby hole? - Have you ever installed a XM radio in that spot, if so - do you know what or how the XM radio is mounted - so that it sits stable behind the plate?
