Pioneer AVIC firmware

Pioneer has updated the firmware for the AVIC F series resulting in some major improvements, including reduced boot-up time on vehicle start-up. If you go to www.avic411.com you can get everything you need to upgrade by yourself (without Pioneer's formal help). Lots of hacking support available here as well.
Pioneer AVIC comes with all of the goodies like bluetooth and iPod integration (all you need is a specific iPod cable, available on eBay) built in making it the most cost effective unit(s). I'll let the audiophiles argue the acoustic merits.

If you go to Avic411.com you will see how many problems the Pioneer HU's have. Convinced me to buy the Kenwood, haven't looked back since.

I have had Kenwood DNX8120 installed for awhile now. I highly recommend it.

I like the kenwood double din excellon. works well and easy to ground the park brake wire so you can drive and use your nav to put info into / music vids.

Firmware update on my F700BT completed and start-up issue is vastly improved. I have not timed the start but the radio is going before I hit the end of my driveway and the map pops up shortly after (with proper lawyer screen). Works well for me. No complaints thus far.

Moving between screens is fast and smooth (major improvement). I use a BB Bold with my AVIC, no probs.

Final thoughts

1) I view the radio as I view the TT. Modifiable and a work in progress. Mostly satisfying to customize, sometimes frustrating. Final result is personal and unique.
2) Great support through forums like this and avic411.
3) Best bang for buck is F700. Difference from F900 is that it can't play DVDs (no biggie since you can see movies off SD card) and the finish of the face is matte black vs. glossy black for F900.
4) Consider new X series if you don't want to fool around too much since X is mostly an updated F series.
5) Do the Hardware Bypass when installing to allow for more flexibility in use.
6) If you are comfortable working with Windows CE/mobile you'll have a good time modding.
Enjoy your project (AVIC) within a project (TT).
