Contacted USAA insurance Friday and was shocked that for a 2004 996TT that I had my eyes on they wanted to TRIPLE what I am currently paying in insurance. Their quote for TWO cars with multi-car discount was $602.72 per month. I was actually speechless and sat in stunned silence at my office desk for a minute or so.
I did a quote on 3 cars just to get a feeling for where I was at. (currently paying $250 for a Saab 9-3 and my wifes SUV)
2006 BMW M3 = $320 / month
2005 Porsche Carrera S = $440 / month
2004 Porsche Turbo = $602 / month
Ok, my wife and I both have one wreck each in the last 3 years but seriously... look at the price difference in the above cars. The only thing I can guess is that they ask what the ORIG MSRP was for the car despite the fact that I would be paying at least 50% of that in most cases.
Is my insurance company smoking crack or is this normal? What are you guys paying?

The problem is almost certainly your driving record, but possibly also compounded by the possibility that you live in a higher risk area (your profile says Stuttgart so not sure if you're there or stateside). I was also shocked to get the bill for my 996TT (relative to my other cars) but found that any other insurer than my current carrier would be even worse due to my long term insurance status with them. Your current carrier is more likely to forgive an accident or two provided you have a long driving history with them. That being said, I'd certainly call around for some more quotes to see if they are way off in their estimate for you and your wife. Good luck!

Asking what people in other parts of the country what their insurance costs for their 996tt is useless, ask some locals in your area what they are paying and you will get an idea of what you should be paying.
Please keep me posted. I'm getting ready to ship my TT to Germany (Graf area) for a few years. USAA is charging me $79.66 per month. If that is the price I will be leaving the car in the good old USA and pick up a beater. Of course for $600 a month I should be able to get soemthing pretty nice.

You are paying $250 for two cars (Saab & SUV) and if you were to change your Saab for a 996tt your monthly premium would go to $602 but a Carrera S would be $440? If you were doing a change of car instead of an addition then any surcharge for your driving history would have already been taken into account in your monthly premium of $250. So the price change would be only based on the physical damage portion of your policy which is based on the price of the car. Since the price difference between a 05 Carrera S and a 04 996tt is about 20-25%, the premium should be within that amount of the $190 additional for the Carrera S.
Looks like the representative you called on the 800 number made a mistake.
27, Active Duty, O-3, clean record, married/house/multi car discount (SAAB 9-3, 4runner) total monthly for all 3 cars is $227. I told them the orig MSRP of my vehicle was $160K if that helps- I was told this was to calculate replacement value.
