Exclamation A common problem - Bad front wheel bearing on 996TT

We've seen quite a few of these now. It seems the 4WD 996 cars are prone to front wheel bearings wearing out. If you're taking your suspension apart and have a chance to try this, spin the hubs once the CV shafts are disconnected.

If it spins too easily, and especially if it makes noise, it's a good idea to replace it because the bearing is worn.

Here's an example of how it should not look/sound on a 996TT. This car had about 30,000 miles. We've seen them on cars as few as 20,000, but it really depends on how and where it was driven.

I've done both of mine 2000miles ago as a precaution when doing the control arms and a spindle. Fun job

How often do the rears go out? I know the bearing itself is substantially bigger.

Bearings

Ive only seen the rears go out on the higher milage points(70-80k) and that I wouldn't even call that common. Unless your running a 20" wheel in the rear of a 996 then they would wear out a little quicker, but no worries if you have not had any problems yet.

Whenever you guys are doing suspension installs and removing the front suspension you might as well go the extra mile and check/replace those

Yep, my front right fried at about 45k. The bearing race looked like metallic mice had been chewing on it.

hmmmm. So the wheel bearing knows you are running 20 inch wheels? pretty smart bearings

It has nothing to do with tire and wheel size...it is moreso related to tire and wheel WEIGHT; however, unless you have steel chrome wheels, and run flats, I doubt it would affect the bearings at all.

Tracking the car, or pothole prone areas will expedite wear, not aftermarket wheels, so long as they are not excessively overweight

I drove mine with a bad, very loud, front right bearing for a few weeks. You could not tell by trying to move the wheel itself - it felt very solid. I autocrossed the car for a couple of days in this condition and didn't notice any change in handling. BTW, this is not recommended. Of course, when the wheel starts to get loose or one of those bearings shatters, you will notice a change in how it handles.
