i spoke with a local dealer buddy. i asked his thoughts on a 996tt i was looking at. since the mileage is around 28k - he had asked if it had the 30k service done. he says he routinely sees 996TT leave jim ellis porsche with around $7k+ worth of work when the get done with "finding" items that need addressing. what should just the 30k service run assuming no surprises (that a PPI should pick up) ?

The regular charge for a 30K service seems to be around $1500 bucks and indeed the plugs is the hardest part and really the only item on the list that is "work to be done". The rest of the 30K is check this and check that.
I'd find a new friend if they are talking $7K for a 30K service.
I recently spent $5,000 for random items on my 911 Turbo with 37k miles. This included:
Spoiler Hydraulic Cylinder Replacement (the new part requires replacement of both cylinders).
Driver's side door micro switch replacement.
Front passenger wheel bearing.
Brake Flush.
Oil Change.
The car is going to need a new clutch and pulley bearing replacement soon. It adds up fast. This isn't the cost of the service, but typically you'll find issues with the car when it comes in.
there are always preventative maintenance things that you can fix if you have an open checkbook or are clueless on what really needs to be done......
I have gone back to a few service writers after my mother of female family members get pressured into fixing things that are beyond the scope of a normal repair bill.
I would suggest a brake flush unless one has been done in the last 24 months - it is good insurance and the cost is usually "only" about $300. Oil change too. Total should be no more then $2000.

I think that $7k service comes with plenty of KY and one soap on a rope.
that is ridiculous. I would, however, do the coil packs at the same time. They are about the same as the plugs in cost, but the labor is the killer. Do it once.

You could do the service yourself? Lots of people do. Just because it has been done by a dealer does not make it good. In fact I have some service aquaintences here who say the dealer techs are actually the worst choice after the warranty has expired.

I spent 800 dollars for my 30k service at my local P dealer. 7K is way out of line if it is only the standard 30k service.
