My car sounds loud too (well it is a GT-800), but seems to go away at 1500 RPM. I am going to try the mystery oil additive thing and see how things go.

That article only covers non turbo engines. Intermediate shaft in a tt engine is the same as it was in the air cooled motors. It is not supported by a ball bearing.

Does anybody know for sure why the bearings fail in a tt engine? I will probably split my case this winter and replace the shaft and bearings but am I going to have the same problem in 30K miles?

Can somebody help me out with a link to a shop manual for a tt. I've done a few air cooled motors but have never seen a water cooled engine apart.

Someone mentioned finding metal particles in their oil filter as a sure sign of this type of failure. Does this happen when the shaft has let go, or is in the process of failure?

Art,

I remember talking to Kevin about his rebuilt motors when I had my problem. It may be more cost effective to just get one of his rebuilt motors and then send yours to him to rebuild for someone else. Mine was in pieces, so it was much more difficult to do that, but if yours is complete, then it's more easily handled. Also, I had the warranty issues to deal with, so I wasn't in a position to decide how to handle the repair/claim issues. If i were to be in this problem again but without any warranty, I'd definitely look into his rebuilt motor. If you plan on doing it yourself...then that's a different story.
