996tt Intermediate Shaft Noise

Here is an update on my 996tt purchase. I found a 2002 996tt with a perfect body (no paint work) and perfect interior with only 30K miles. After a week of ownership I've been noticing way too much intermediate shaft noise. When I test drove it it sounded fine with the windows down but I might have had the windows down when the the motor was not to the full operating temperature. I am a BMW guy so I am more used to listening for engine noises when the engine is cold. After a week of driving the car I noticed a pretty loud rattle at 1500rpm as well as a loud gear rattle at idle. I was aware before the test drive that all 996tt cars make some intermediate shaft noise at idle but what I am concerned about is the noise above 1000rpm. I took the car to the Porsche dealer today and they told me that the sound is definitely loud buy they don't think it is not normal so they don't want to do anything about it.
The shop foreman with 25 year of experience told me: "It sucks that it sounds like it does but unfortunately Porsche tells us it is normal so there is nothing we can do about it" He did tell me that my car is louder than normal but he doesn't think I will have any intermediate shaft problems down the road.
Tonight I checked the oil level and it was too high. I drained some oil from the crank case and added some Marvel Mystery oil because I used it in my old 911. The engine sounds much better, almost sounds normal. Here is a clip of how it sounded before I took it to the dealer. Let me know if your engine sounds the same. The shop foreman did tell me it was pretty crappy of Porsche to blows off problems like this as normal.

If you have a light weight flywheel the rattle is normal,if you don't have one I don't think this is normal...

It's really not that bad... Consider going to 5W-50 at the next oil change- a heavier oil can help quiet things down a bit.

Agree with Colt45 about the 5W50.

You are right. Porsche allows alot of noise from these engines and still term them normal. I approched my wrench with several noises and he told me not to worry. So its probably nothing big.

I don't have enough post to send you a PM but I would love to find out what you did about the noise, if anything. I did see your post and your car does sound identical to mine.

I had the same experience when I purchased my car. Being that this was my first Porsche the noise freaked me out. And, same as you, my mechanic said it was normal. I did switch to 5w50 and zmax (i know, but it does help) and the noise was reduced say 40-50%.

I hear two different noises at your engine...the one is the constant noise from the chain, that is normal and the other is a ticking noise with a frequency of two times per second which is not good...I have not hear this noise to any turbo engine here...However it might be something easy to fix but check it out...

I haven't done anything about it yet. I changed the oil with Total 5W-40 and it got a little better but it is definitely loud and annoying. I've been listening to a bunch of 996tts on youtube and it seems like a lot of them sound similar. Does your car make the noise all the way to 2K rpm? My noise seems to go away at 1K rpm and you hear it again between 1.5K-1.8K rpm.

Unfortunately the noise does not go away and at 2k I can still hear it. Above that, other noises from the engine start to blend in. I have read that a few people replaced or re-built there engines but I am not sure if it was because of catastrophic failure or just they were tired of waiting for the time bomb to go off in there engine. The noise is very loud compared to most and extremely annoying.
Not sure what to do next. Having an oil sample done this week to try to figure out just how bad it is. No check engine lights and other than the noise, car drives great.

can someone explain at what point has the intermediate shaft failed and it is time for a re-build or new engine other than the obvious and a catastrophic failure.
