I'm looking to move forward and purchase a 996 TT and would like your input on what to look for while searching for the "right" car. I have extensive experience with cars and have been in the Evo and Supra worlds over the past 15 years so I feel comfortable that I'll find it! I've done some searching on this forum and have a couple tips here and there but haven't found a centralized thread outlining it all...hopefully I didn't miss one. What should I look for? What are known issues to look out for? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys!

service history, low mileage low owner count. proper PPI from a porsche specialist.
DME scan to reveal stage 1 and stage 2 overrevs
is a good start
oh and any paint work kills resale of Porsches same as real high miles
and if u want a carfax or opinion post up the car and we can take a look
known issues, 2nd gear pop out on transmission, coolant tanks getting hard n cracking n leaking, clutch res accumulator and slave failure, oil pressure sending unit going out, hydraulic rams leaking for spoiler.

Type and 1 and Type 2 over-revs are difficult to make sense of. Type 2 can merely be caused by being 1K rpm over the shift point - very common. Don't look for blue hydraulic brake fluid (ATE Super blue) - the car may have been tracked! Lord have mercy

I personally would not purchase a tracked car. and my only choice would be a Turbo "S" cash permitting.

What about the mileage point when things begin breaking or major component needing replacing (clutch, shock, etc.)? This point always exist for every car.
For the older air cooled porsches this is usually about 100K.

some times we have seen the lower mileage cars break more often due to sitting too much. as far as things going out other then wear items people havent really wore them out.
john just hit 100k of modded miles
there are things to check for but really the only thing mileage does it kill resale value has not much to do with its reliability its more of how it was taken care of. History History History
clutch accumulator, coolant tanks, fuel pumps, 2nd gear pop out, leaky spoiler towers, F hose getting old n stiff n cracking..

It seems as though most of the things to look for are pretty common amongst these cars. I'd honestly say the thing that worries me the most would be the 2nd gear pop out... the rest of the stuff is pretty general maintenance and or simple replacement stuff.
Let me ask this then: do the majority of people that have had the tranny rebuilt due to the 2nd gear pop out ever run into the problem again? Is it something that Porsche seems to have figured out with the rebuild, or is it a recurring issue that requires some upgraded components and or additional machining like I have read about in some other posts??
