DIY: GT3 lower center console delete for $2 and a couple hours

I came to the conclusion that $150 for a piece of trim with some carpet on it was absurd...

so here is my solution! Cardboard, $2 worth of black felt from walmart, and some spray adhesive!

:O

You car is crying. And so am I.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but your car isn't a second hand VW. This car actually has some value. Why on earth would you go through all the fabrication effort and not use at least plastic or another material that will not be destroyed if a coke or coffee spills? As silly as the GT3 kit is in principle, I would expect a step up in quality if you are going to DIY. Plastic would not take much longer. And the stigma would be much less. Again, not trying to be a jerk. Just offering some 100% honest criticism.

I should have mentioned i'm building this car primarily for the track. Most of my interior is gone anyway so this is purely cosmetic.

Not horrible..considering. Maybe keep an eye out for the correct parts and this will only be temporary? Actually kind of a nice place to put a real boost gauge and maybe 2 EGT gauges?

Honestly i don't think i'll buy the real part considering how all i wanted to do was hide the airbag sensor and this took care of that. I'm definitely a form follows function kind of guy.

hope you screwed or glued the pieces. would hate to see them coming loose and preventing you to access the pedals.

They are quite secure in place, no movement in any direction.

Nice, I can always appreciate a good DIY alternative, and I have to say it looks pretty good in finished form. However, I have some questions for you now that you've done the mod.

1. How much weight did you save (I'm always interested in this)?
2. Without the panel, how has the driving experienced changed?

Of course I'm more concerned with question number 2, particularly as I've learned to brace my leg a bit on the factory parts you removed. So, I'm definitely curious how you enjoy cornering without it there. Thanks!

I'm 6'2 and I'm definitely more comfortable without the console. As far as weight savings, about 4 lbs.

Very nice. A bit of DIY ingenuity and creativity always trumps mass produced anything. This is what true customizing is, you being the engineer, designer, parts procurer, fabricator and installer. I have built custom motorcycles for a living since the '70s and there is a lot of this in my job. I understand it and appreciate it. Just don't show the Postmaster General ;-)
