Windshield Replacement?

Windshield Replacement?
Has anyone ever replaced a windshield on your 996TT? Did you go through a dealer or a place like safelite?
I want the job done well, but I don't want to pay $1000 for it!
Tired of the two little rock chips I've got and I'm ready to do this!

I've used safelite to put new OEM windshield in my 928 years ago and they did a good job= was a 1000 then. I had them repair a chip recently in my A4 that was small and down low, they were very nice and it came out well. I personally only use OEM glass because I'm **** lol.

Perfect timing! In my quest to make my black beauty new, I recently went down the road of windshield replacement. I tried several local shops who scratched their heads and threw their hands in the air. I called Safelite and they sent two different people to do the job. Both times..WRONG GLASS!! Even with VIN number they somehow was not getting the right glass with rain sensor behind rear view mirror. Finally, the good folks at Brumos in Jacksonville found and sent me the right glass! I now need someone competent enough to change it or at least some guidance and I'll do it myself like I've had to do for everything else on this beast! Don't forget the plastic molding and if you have rain sensor!

I have State Farm insurance which provides "free" windshield replacements. Take the car to one of their approved installers who accepts what SF pays and it gets done. No deductibles or co-pays. Not oem glass but, hey, glass is glass, imo. Had my 997 done a couple of years ago and will do so again in the spring due to pitting. Don't know if this is available in all states. Had an Audi done a couple of weeks ago.......

After 3 windshields I decided to use 4 mil safety glass film. Using 8 mil next time.
I replace the film when it gets scratched from dirt, rocks, etc.
Costs less than $40 from Amazon. Not willing to pay ~$400 for custom windshield protection film.

Where are you located ?
Do you have part numbers for windshield and gaskets ? Would like to get this done on my car, however, I prefer to avoid Safelite, if possible. I'm in SoCal.

Windshield seal: 996 541 531 01
Windshield trim: 996 541 541 01
The windshield seal is optional if I'm not mistaken and can be reused. The trim gets destroyed. I may have it backward though.

I had mine replaced last year, seems the biggest PITA was plugging in the antenna on the bottom of the windshield. Two guys had to hold it just above the frame and a third with small hands go inside the vehicle and plug it in.
My local shop did not want to do it since the pay from insurance company was too low for the warranty protection they have to offer. Safelite was willing to "pop" it in but I convince the shop to do it instead.
He showed me the cost on windshield and he was into it for ~700.00

I recommend adding glass coverage to your insurance policy.
FYI, Safelite is the installer contracted by most of the insurance companies. If the insurance company wants to inspect the damage before approving the claim, they are most likely sending someone from Safelite. That said, the insurance company cannot force you to use them. Because of this relationship, I feel that for small chips, Safelite is more likely to only get approval for repair than full replacement.
Also, I have heard that some local mom and pop glass replacement companies have complained about Safelite for unfair business practices. The way it works is the insurance company sends out a Safelite person to inspect the damage and that inspector just happens to show up with the glass and offers to fix it on site, essentially poaching the business from the local guys.
All that said, I have never personally had a bad experience with Safelite and their customer service is quite good.

As many have said, you need to know if you have the rain sensor or not. They should also ask about the color of the tint band at the top of the glass. At least they did for mine. Lastly, I prefer having the glass replaced at home and then I let the car sit for a few days so that the sealant cures. You don't want to take a chance of hitting a bump and having the glass lose some of its seal.
