I sold a nice blue one last year for $73.5k. I'm currently selling another Minerva Blue one for similar money with higher priced upgrades. The good cars should continue to appreciate. The key, in my opinion, is having:
1) Manual transmission
2) Clean exterior with front end clear bra
3) Either a one off color or lower mile usual color
4) Records and proof of garage storage
The right mods like Sport Seats and full leather interior should also add value.

Some of these comments are pretty funny:
Used cars are gross. You and your followers here have the outlook of guys who drop out of college and want to pretend to be successful. Once you hit a certain income level you'll understand. A used car is literally not even something successful people think about.
Yea, because a successful person thinks it's a great idea to dump his money in a new car; the worst depreciating asset you can find?! I'm guessing he bought a new Kia Rio

A lot of "what a car! But the lights!" And "what a car! But the interior!"
I like the lights on the turbo (not boxster or 996.1) and the interior, especially with leather and carbon fiber looks great to me. What's all the fuss about?

I like both 996 mk1 and mk2 exteriors although only with the aerokit. I also don't see what the fuss is all about the interior. The TT all leather interior is beautiful in my mind and a great upgrade coming from a vinyl 986 interior. With a few minor touches it can become even better.

then: buy the car and you can upgrade the front fascia for a cpl grand to a 997. true. lol.
i actually have come to believe these headlamps will have their own cachet some day if they don't already. they're "different" thats for sure.
i don't see the values rising any time soon either. i'm with ya on this. at least mine won't. mileage though it'll still keep up with a new one ...mostly

I wouldn't buy a 996 Turbo for its potential to appreciate in value.
I would buy a 996 Turbo (and did) because it is the car I wanted above all others.
If the car appreciates when it comes time to sell or trade it in, which could be after one is dead if he holds on to the car for that long, that's just a bonus. The higher 996 Turbo trade in/resale price, not the fact one is dead.
The car is probably still going to represent a net loss loss in terms of what it costs to maintain and insure, what the money could have brought if invested in a real investment vehicle (figuratively speaking), etc.
I mean while in the distant future there will be a barn 996 Turbo that brings lottery money to the fortunate owner (or finder) most will end their lives in a salvage yard after being passed on from owner to owner for less and less money.

I do not see nice cars that are maintained going for lower price at each sale especially stock cars as time goes on= but that's an opinion lol. Agree these cars are not an investment but see the bath taken at resale coming to an end soon.
