price to change 2nd gear synchro

Hey everyone I've ran into a problem this year before I put my car away for winter Couple months before I put it away my car started to grind on 2nd gear downshift . I've read on other threads that it's most likely my synchro just wondering if anyone had this problem and what price tag should expect for the job like this if it's the synchro

I had my 1st and 2nd gear synchros replaced while they were fixing the thrust bearing and changing my clutch. It was $6 K Cdn for parts & labour (not counting the price for the clutch). We don't have a lot of choices for shops here, so I had to take what I could get. It seems to be fixed OK though.

My 2nd gear synchro was toast since I bought the car - it took me over 3 years to fix it. I'm not sure I would pay to do the job just for that.

If you don't mind me asking where did you source out your parts from I got a quote from gbox for 2400 To replace 2ed gear ½ shift sleeve and 2ed synchro and I'm guess another 2k to ship it there and back and finding someone to take the actual tranny out and put it back in looking at another 1500 and on top of all this I wanted to upgrade to a Sachs clutch 2.5 add another 1700 just for the clutch .....how come it took 3 years to fix it?

My Indy did everything. I brought him the car - he removed the trans and passed it on to a trans specialist who sourced the parts and did the work. My Indy then replaced the clutch (Sachs 2.5) which I had purchased from Pelican parts for < $1 K. The Indy also had the flywheel resurfaced (and the drill & tap GT2 slave mod)

It took 3 years to fix because it wasn't a show-stopper for me that the sychro was shot. I lived with it until there was enough work to do to make it worthwhile. I did change the trans oil and there were no big pieces of metal in there that would make me think it was urgent.

if you were in la and knew the right mechanics/shops you'd pay $600 to take the trans out and put back it back in after the 2.5/3k(max) repair to the first/second gear synchros.

if you take it to a porsche dealership it will run you north of $5/6k all in. i'd rather drop the trans and give it to a pro, let them open it up and replace what''s needed. but i balked at having it shipped anywhere and fortunately didn't need to. i've had three opened g50 transmissions.

Unfortunately I'm in Toronto Canada and wishing I had the resource's that you guys have in the states I've already assumed that it's gonna cost me about 4k just for synchro or 6k for the Sachs 2.5 clutch & synchro but I will be changing the gearbox oil once this bloody snow is gone

i'm not sure if your issue is 2nd gear pop out or just grinding ( bad synchro's ) but if it's just the 2nd gear issue, i would wait until i needed a clutch and go in and have it all sorted. but if you do opt to drop the box for r&r i would definitely go for the sachs 2.5 as well. though i opened my box last year for bearings and went with an oem sachs with a gt2 disc, and i'm at 500rwhp. give or take. clutch can handle that. the 2.5 is the next logical upgrade though, so your thinking is right.

just don't let them **** you on the g'box rebuild and remember. it is only a 5-6 hour job TOPS to remove and re-install the trans. the work on it is relatively straightforward for an experienced g50 re-builder. but caveat emptor, as my porsche dealership had to re-do their own work once several years ago to re-shim the gear stack placement to allow for their own updated specs. thankfully it was all under warranty.

gl w it.
