Question: How much oil do you burn?
So I'm a new owner of a 996 TT. The shop I take it to says I should be burning about 1qt ever 1000 miles. I know I'm doing more. My driving pattern is really, take it out, have fun (4-6K RPM, stay under 130mph), get a coffee and put it away till next Sunday. After every third time I drive it I notice the oil indicator is down to the second level and I have to put a quart in.
Just wondering how much other folks are burning.

I find that with driving hard I go through about 1quart at almost 1k or less.
I also think that the mobile1 0w-40 or 30 might be too thin now for my 13-14yr old car.
I recently switched to rotella t6 5w-40 and notice it doesn't burn as much...

About how many miles are you running then before you go down a quart? Had my car just over a year and still think I burn more than 1qt a 1,000 miles and drive mine similar. I just changed the oil myself and will now do a better job of tracking exactly how much I burn, but so far everyone seems to state "it's normal." Like I said I will track mine and get a much better idea how much it burns in how many miles, but still curious how many miles are you running before adding the oil?

i never run low enough to need a quart but by extrapolating what i add which is usually a 1/3 to 1/2 qt at a time i still use 1 qt per 1 k miles. this has been on both cars. it never changes nor does my driving style deviate, but i imagine the more sedately one drives, the less they'll use.

I have logged exact usage... mine is 1/2 quart every 400 miles since my last oil change. So I usually watch the gauge every time I drive and do a minor top up if it goes down to the 1st line.
I drive like a granny 75% of the time and thrash the living bejesus out of her the other 25% but usually on 30-130 mph runs and a lot of 60-100 WOT
10 year old car, 36,000 miles

Letting it get a single quart low would not be an issue even in the slightest way. It is a dry sump motor with about 6 quarts of oil in that sump at any given time so being down one is really a total non issue.

I have exactly 1000 miles on my freshly rebuilt motor. I did an oil change at 500 miles and have tracked oil usage among other things. Out of the last 500 miles since the oil change, car has seen 365 hard track miles with basically all 7000-7500 shifts. Oil burn has been 1/5 of a quart (1 bar on the electronic level gauge).
It seems that cars that seem to consume more oil are those that have done a very gently break in early on in its life. My engine came out of the engine build room and saw 7000+ and high boost right away along with high rpm off throttle coast downs as part of the break in process to seat the piston rings. Oil used is Mobil 1 5w50.
Porsche states 1 liter per 1000km is max oil usage for the Mezger.. (thats 1.7q per 1000miles).

That's interesting to know. I think mine was a garage, babied queen. No validation for that other than only 10k on it when I bought it and looked new everywhere. I'm trying to change that but so far after a year-not doing a great job. I did manage to put an extra 4,000 on the clock and add some "fun factor." I am curious to see now that I changed my own oil the exact quantity of oil I burn.

From my experience all Porsche's "use" oil. More when driven aggressively, less when driven conservatively. Turbo's use more (especially under boost) than N/A cars.
If on a warm day with motor warmed up you lightly rev it, exhaust should be clear and clean, also when returned to idle. If it's smokey or puffing a bit, you may have a problem.

I can however state that your experience is similar to mine.
As long as I take it easy oil consumption is while not zero quite low. But a couple of hard thrashes and the level can drop. A couple of these and the level is down enough I can add a quart of oil.
The above has been the way my 2003 Turbo has been now for ever since I've owned it. Currently the engine has over 135K miles.
Also, the engine oil consumption doesn't appear to be affected by whether the engine has 0w-40 oil or 5w-50 oil.
Since temps are mild in the winter where I live and drive and yet can get quite hot in the summer a year to two back I switched from 0w-40 in the winter and 5w-50 in the summer to running 5w-50 year 'round. However, the last oil/filter service back in Jan. done back at a mid-west dealer had 0w-40 oil used. Since it was very cold there and of course "winter" here where I live and drive I didn't care.
One last thing: Be sure you give the engine the 2 minutes of idling to give the turbos time to shed their considerable heat load before you shut off the engine. Not doing so can damage the turbo seals and the engine could become an oil burner.

Oil consumption might be alarming for those that are use to mild street cars. But for high performance machines, it's quite normal. High performance = high heat, high load. Both of which require loser bearing clearances for metal expansion and increased oil flow.
Oil consumption might actually decrease at track operating temperatures than the occasional burst at street temps where piston ring clearances haven't closed up and such.
