Fault code P0444???

For the first time in 6 years of owning this car, I got a CEL. I noticed it this weekend at the track but can't recall when in popped up. I'm curious if any of the technical types on the forum here have any experience with this. I scanned it with durametric and pulled up the code P0444: Porsche fault code 98 - tank vent valve. This seems to be the culprit as all the emission readiness codes are set to PASS and there is nothing else of note. You can ignore the the CAN time out PSM as that is normal since the whole PSM system has been removed from the car years ago when the Cup ABS system was installed.

I did a little bit of google work on this and it seems this MAY be the valve that opens then the fuel nozzle is inserted into the filler neck and allows fuel vapors to be diverted to the charcoal canister during fueling. In PET it's referred to as a "bleeder valve" part # 996.201.143.01. I do however hear the clicking noise when the flapper in the neck is pushed in which indicates that the valve seems to be working, but what do I know? I spoke with another Porsche mechanic and he said this error code may be referring to some valve on the engine. I'm not sure about that however. Any ideas from the pros here would be appreciated..

Curious you mentioned you were at the track by chance did you fill it with gas while the car was running? I once got this code when I was filling up the gas station and left the car running with the A/C on. I stopped filling while my car was running and never had the code comeback.

Absolutely. I usually fill the tank at the track with the car running. I come off the track and leave the car idling for about 10 minutes to cool the turbos. During this time I usually fill the tank from my fuel jugs. I've been doing it like this for years and never had any issues.

Funny thing is I did same thing for years in Az left the A/C on while fueling , I think I read in the manual you're not supposed to do that but it's been two years and that code hasn't come back since I stopped fueling while my cars running.

98 EVAP canister purge valve - open circuit

Possible fault cause
♦ Wiring harness
♦ EVAP canister purge valve
♦ DME control module

So I would clear the code and see if it comes back. You could also perform adaptation:
♦ Switch on the ignition
♦ Wait one minute
♦ Do not press the accelerator
♦ Switch off the ignition for at
least 10 seconds
♦ Read out the fault memory

Does anyone know where exactly the "EVAP canister purge valve" is located and the part number for it? It's not very clear in PET or the maintenance manual which refers to it. It's either right near the EVAP canister (front right wheel well) or more likely on the engine near the intake somewhere. Any guidance / pics would be appreciated.

I found a picture (see link below) of what is supposed to be the EVAP purge valve but it looks like it's pointing to the N75 boost control frequency valve (996.605.155.00) instead. Obviously that is wrong.

Thanks!

Under the right front fender attached to the fuel filler tube I think. Here's a diagram. Part # 6.

That's not it. #6 at the fuel filler tube is the fuel tank vent valve. This is the valve that opens when you push the metal flapper valve open at the fuel filler neck. You can hear a click when the valve opens. The function of this valve to allow fuel vapors to be directed to the EVAP (charcoal) canister during fueling. These vapors are then diverted though the evap purge valve into the intake to be burned by the engine when running. When the #6 valve fails is when you can not fill the fuel tank with gas as the pump will keep shutting off due to the build up of vapors.

That's bizarre JP. That looks like a check valve to me. The evap purge valve will have wiring going to it and a connector on it. How else would you trouble shoot the pins at the connector according to the maintenance manual in the link attache below.

You are the man my friend. Thank you!! That has to be it then. Reps to you!

So it looks like it's the valve that is peeking out behind the vacuum check valve (with the zip tied rubber cap) in the pic below of the top of my engine. Must be it as it has a plastic pipe going to it.
