View Poll Results: Please check which year vehicle, and which shifter you had when the problem occurred
I have a 2002 X50, stock shifter, started at 21k miles. Dealer, despite replacing 2nd and 3rd gear assembly 3,000 miles ago, claimed Porsche will deny coverage since the numbers show a couple over-revs and because that "could" have caused the problem of the 2nd gear pop-out. Interesting to note is that the first thing they mentioned, as an excuse for denial, was the aftermarket exhaust and alleging that I had larger intercoolers. When I explained that I didn't see either exhaust or intercoolers could contribute to damaging a transmission in any way and that I did not have different intercoolers, they started in with the numbers shown on the "black box" of the engine. Then they told me that if I paid them $3,000, they would take it apart and send pics to Porsche and if it was determined that the pop-out issue was related to some improper installation of the 2nd and 3rd gear assembly, they would cover it. and if they determined it was driver abuse, I would be out of luck. I wonder what they would have said ?? So the pop-out problem remains. Very frustrating.
your situation seems to mirror mine, which i just recently emerged from successfully almost to the t. huge determinant in whether or not your repair will/will not be "covered" seems to be ( was for me ) whether or not you bought the car from the dealership that you're asking to do work. i'm sure that walking in cold would have cost me 9k while getting to know the tech and service advisor from the minute i bought the car ( literally, as i knew i was buying this "used", and haven't done that in 20 years..) point is, i anticipated i was gonna have SOME kind of merry go round stuff with them over something, so i went out of my way to get to know the tech, who has been stellar throughout this ( although they don't want to see me back anytime soon, i'm sure ..)
as it turned out it was "2nd gear popout" issue after having the car for 3 or 4 months.
finding this board and all the help info i got here along with the info that they did NOT expect me to have/know, for me, made all the difference in the world..i also consulted with a lawyer that i didn't end up needing, but i don't leave much to "chance" either. so now they're on my x'mas list.
if your situation is anything like mine was, ( and the start of it is exactly! ) see if you can chase down my earlier posts in here, as they chronicle my initial panic a cpl months ago, all the way to my having the car repaired fully and being happier than sh*t with both it AND the d'ship. the one constant seems to be the standard approach dealerships tend to take when presented with this well known "issue", as i was also told it was 3k to "tear it down" and "diagnose". same as you. many different outcomes for people dealing with the same problem. but there's really no doubt about the "problem" existing. they know.
but they really had me going for a minute, and i just wasn't gonna live with that 2nd gear sh*t. good luck man.
