Hmmmmm, mine is popping out of FIRST......and at least once a day....and now I have noticed.......I am sitting at the light.....SOLIDLY in first....with my hand on it hold it "In" gear......and then when it happens....I blip the throttle and I just start to let out the clutch...and you feel the shifter jump ever so slightly and it grinds....cause I am holding it in....so it does it even if my hand is on it ............holding it in...

For you guys that had it jump out of 2nd.....would it still do it if you were "Holding" it in gear?

Chris
STILL hoping it's an adjustment........

Hey Chris, when I had my 2nd gear issue, it would pop out when going downhill at idle. If I held the shift knob, I could feel it move slightly forward like a 1/2 inch, but I could hold it and it would not pop-out.

As for your issue, I have no idea, and hope it is an adjustment, but the grind has me concerned. I would think it is the synchro at that point.

Popping out of 2nd -- 2003 X50 about 19k miles

Had the problem on my 2003 X50. My long sorry saga is here:
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...d.php?t=249285
Porsche couldn't have handled this worse. Since I track the car at DE's, Porsche refused to cover under warranty.

... And told me to 'learn how to drive' ...

Invoice for the repair is here:
http://www.dinigroup.com/~mdini/tran...ice_2-2-06.pdf

This is much more common than Porsche is admitting.

Interesting...reading the Rennlist thread....I noticed the statement made by Tom Kerr.......see below....

Is this true? This is good news to me..... I thought I had heard it was more like $6500 to rebuild......$3000 would be a lot easier on the budget.....who has had it down through an independent and what was the invoice?

Chris

3. these trannies can be rebuilt way better (ie steel syncros, ect) for way cheaper.....WAY CHEAPER than a "new tranny"
Brian Copans THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY (513-779-3302) quoted me about 3k from the time he receives it and sends it back (obviously the removal and install is on you) can also try Roger Brown at Powerhaus 303-442-4327. I have talked to both of these guys (alot) and both took alot of time with me and were very nice and I learned alot. Call them both.

Achiless heel?

'01 TT here - completely stock (including shifter). I first noticed the problem around 17K miles although it's entirely possible that it had existed earlier but I hadn't discovered it due to the specific driving circumstances that cause it to occur. Car has never been tracked or speed shifted, just the occassional spirited driving.

Thankfully, the service dept at my dealer was able to make a strong case for a new transmission thus convincing the extended warranty to go that route. If you follow the thread HERE, in the series of pics showing the engine and tranny, I've included a shot of the drain plug showing what I consider to be excessive metal filings! The transmission fluid also showed tiny particles that tested positively for Copper so there may well have been a synchro issue as well!

There is no doubt that the 996TT powertrain is a technological marvel and certainly built for routine track duty but if it has an achiless heel, this has to be it!

PCNA has no obligation to cover such a problem, especially if you're not the original owner. The argument that this is a "common problem" has not exactly been substantiated considering the total production.

If you're in the market, have the car checked out by an experienced and trustworthy shop/mechanic. Buying a certified car or one with a good extended warranty may be a good idea as well.

extended warranties also decline such issues as "abuse"... they all try to get out of it since its $10K +.. I disagree with you... they have an obligation to extend the warranty to anyone unless they can prove that driver error/abuse was the cause. Often its from after market shifters installed improperly.
I know first hand all this happened to me and It was installed at the dealership.
Its not only a pop out issue.... its coupled with 2nd gear not going in... meaning- stuff in the gate. I had that as well.

unvmym3, I currently have the problem and I have another year of warranty plus 2 years of porsche pre-owned. The dealership is telling me that Porsche told them 80% of the "2nd gear" issues were due to abuse. So they are telling me that once they open the tranny it could be all my responibility. So if they are doing this to me with another 3 years of warranty, I am pretty sure they will charge for a car that is out of warranty (unless they feel in a giving mood or something)...

what EXACTLY happens when 2nd gear pops out? I mean, does the shifter pop back to neutral, or does the shifter stay in place and just lose gear?

SOMETIMES if Im not careful, I only slide my "tequipment" SSK half way into second (user error) and dont put it down the whole way...it obviously came back out...but I have only done this once...
