View Poll Results: Please check which year vehicle, and which shifter you had when the problem occurred
Scott, I just thought about it.... this sample does not tell us the percentage within the relative pool... meaning... out of how many ssks do we have problems.... same goes for stock shifters...
So just because there are 18 stock shifters to 7 ssk's.. it doesnt mean that stock shifters are more prone to messing up.... one member already extrapolated this data and he believes that the SSks have nothing to do with the problem... I totally disagree....this data shows only the percentages between the two pools and not with in them....
did I make sense??? I'm no statistician...
To determine the individual percentages of occurrence we'll need another poll asking every forum member with a 996TT to chime in on whether they have a stock shifter or an SSK. The intent of this poll wasn't quite that. The fact that we have a sizeable number of stock shifters exhibiting the problem indicates that there is a root cause that is independent of the shifter. Whether it is an assembly defect or an inherent weakness in the drivertrain is the eleven thousand dollar question!

Inside information tells me that there was a problem with the tranny on the earlier models.... specifically with the syncros.... but the after market SS do not help either....

Right. Basically, I wanted to find out three things from members on 6speedonline and Rennlist (I also linked this thread from there):
1. Have you had a problem with 2nd gear pop-out.?
2. If so, are you using the stock shifter, or a SSK?
3. What year is the car that you've had the problem with?
To do a poll breaking down each individual pool of owner, I'd have to have one poll only asking how many people on the forum own SSK's, and then another follow-on poll asking how many of those SSK owners have had 2nd gear pop out problems. But since it seems so few people overall have had 2nd gear pop-out problems, I don’t see any reason to break it down further.
This thread has had 1,050 views over the last 10 days or so, and only 25 people have voted that they have had 2nd gear pop-out issues. I think most people that have had the problem would have voted (there’s really no logical reason that they wouldn't)...so we're looking at a very small percentage of 996TT owners, at least on these two forums, that are claiming to have had issues. Slightly over 2%.
And out of those people, the majority have stock shifters. So from these results, I think we can safely assume that the SSK really doesn't increase your chance of having the problem.
Thanks for a neat summary, Scott! If indeed, the percentage of occurrence is that low (~2% based on your estimation), it is not too surprising that there is no TSB for this problem and also explains why PCNA would take the stand of citing driver abuse even though that may not be the case in many of these situations. Certainly not a good scenario for those that do encounter the problem regarless of whether their factory warranty is intact or not!

Scott, on second thought I'm not sure if we can assume that the 1050 views are all current owners of a 996TT. Even membership stats may not mean much since not all are current owners. We may actually need an ownership poll to determine how many of our residents are current TT owners to get a better idea of the percentage occurrence of this problem.

Agreed, Ive probably viewed this 15 times myself already, I wonder how many 996tt owners there are on 6speed. Hard to believe there are over 200 or 300.
I've been a bit absent from the forum since I sold my 996 TT, so I missed the poll. I did however have the popping out of 2nd gear problem on my 01 with stock shifter and it cost roughly $10K at the Auto Gallery to rebuild the tranny. Not really sure when it started happening but I believe it started before my warranty expired. It just didn't happen often enough for me to think it was a problem. Well porsche was good enough to put up $5K, but come to think of it, I really feel that they should have taken care of all of it. I'm kind of miffed over the whole thing. I wish that 6speed had a bad ass lawyer that could do something about it. I hate to see 2nd hand owners get stuck with this problem and I'd like my 5 grand back.

what im wondering is IF the SSK would exacerbate the issue, making the pop-out issue more pronounced or evident (keeping me from getting one, now)....
