I thought on a 2001, you could still use the factory headunit with an aftermarket amp for the highs and mids no??

Yes...

only on 03's and up you have optical out on the headunit, going to the amp..

Makes it really hard to integrate anything to the headunit..You would have to wire things to the speaker out wires after the amp.

I just recently purchased a small box (just as big as the stock bose), from caraudioinnovations.com.

3 jl audio w0's.. 6.5 inch subs.

sounds excellent. 3 times beter than stock. My system finally sounds descent. everything else is stock (aside from the extra amp to drive the subs)

Its not perfect, but its very enjoyable. the package is around 700, and you need a low-medium power amp for the subs (you can wire this up to any year..weather its 01 or 04... just with the 03's + you wire the new amp to the sub wires coming off the factory amp).

Once this was done i did come to a conclusion that the stock bose mids/highs are not that bad

For people with an '03 or newer, as you may know the head unit has a MOST(optical digital) output going to the amp in the front, where the spare is, which makes it near impossible to keep the head unit but replace the nasty Bose amp (I'd like to meet the clown who did the eq on this "processor" and shoot him).

One of the possible solutions is to hook up something like these to the speaker out of the Bose amp:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qM1gHGC...0&I=5753SIXTY1

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qM1gHGC...0&I=5753SIXTY2

Then run your own amp, and connect to the speaker wires. I haven't tried it but it looks like the only solution I've found.

Another solution of course is to replace the head unit but then you have to run new cable into the front trunk (since the only one in place is the optical) which is more than I would like to mess with.

I wonder if it is possible to run the optical digital output to an Alpine H701 processor. That unit is extremely flexible and can provide plenty of outputs for speakers/subs.

Anyone know off-hand what type of optical connector is used on the back of the '03+ headunit?

The connection between the CDR-23 head and the Bose amp is a dual optical cable (probably bi-directional) whereas the Alpine has what looks like single standard TOSLINK optical input. Certainly not a match out of the box and given that Becker (who makes the CDR-23) actually created MOST, I would expect proprietary handshake between the two units.

BTW, aside from the Rockford Fosgate processor I posted above, it looks like JBL is coming out with one (called Fix8) as well as Alpine (the PXE-H650) but neither has entered production yet.

Nice setup I'm thinking of going the JL way myself with the XR series. I was told the 6.5" setup fits stock though some sites only list the 4" speakers.

I'm hoping I can pick up the XR 650 CSi & 650 CXi speakers. Think I'm going the right way or am I misdirected?

What about some head unit options for a 2001? Did any of you try to just swap out the head unit and leave everything else stock? I read in this thread that someone just swapped the amp and left everything else stock in cluding the head unit...how did that sound. My head unit just died and I was looking for some advice. Wondering what head units would fit nicely in the stock radio enclosure. Thanks!

What size are your subs ? over 10 inchs ? Cause I heard the minimum for really good base

Wow. Sweet system bro. Was just curious, what is the function of the space directly on top of your headunit? Is it a CD changer or something ?
