CJV,

Yes, that is what I thought. I heard that the Bb turbos did not require much cool down.

Speaking of which, I finally got hold of the guy who did the final tuning/upgrade installation/dyno on my car. His name is Sam Shalala at Pro Technik auto.

The rumor was that he, while a legend in Porsche racing wasn't that motivated any more, and only was experienced in working on NA cars.

Well, the truth was, when I got to his shop, there were at least 8 turbos being worked on. He also immediately put my car on the dyno and she pulled 580 on high.

He concurred that swapping the Beru's out for Bosche fr6's was probably a good idea (my car has been showing signs of bad plugs). He also told me that the wastgates were upgraded (they came w/ the GT30's) and recommended that I install a another air filter (an Italian filter good for life) and offered to change the plugs for only $150 (my mech wanted 350). Hopefully my car will be close to 600 for the Supra nats.

Back to the original topic. Sam shut the car down pretty quickly after 4 dyno pulls. I asked if the turbos needed longer to cool down, and he said that the Garretts only needed about 20 seconds of idling to get the oil out/cool.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Chad. That would make the install much simplier than I thought.

Zippy,

Once you have the parts the work is rather easy. Just use good clamps. Like most things that are new alot of people (not all) want to make it sound harder than it is so their high charges appear justified.

GEETEE,

As Scott stated, all my upgraded parts came from S-Car-Go and my ecu was shipped to and tuned by Todd. Sam and a mechanic from the Porsche dealership installed my parts and dialed in my car. Now I finally know all the details behind my car.

This is why some people install "turbo timers," no?

Of course, but all they cause is complications on Porsche's, a minute or 2 of light driving or 2-3 minute idle cooldown hardly takes away from anyones time

Craig, I was just looking on the www.EVOMS.com site and couldn't find anything on the water cooling kit. Do you have any more details on it?

All I know is that, as of last Wednesday, my water cooling kit was "sitting on the floor in [Todd's] office" and it will be installed next Monday or Tuesday.

mclaren55 will become famous soon enough
Garrett BB turbo's need to have coolant run through them, regardless of how long you let them sit. The ball bearing casing is actually a high grade plastic, which of course will eventually distort and grenade your centre cartridge. If you don't run watercooling on them, Garrett will not warranty the turbo. As for letting turbo's cool down, I have never had one fail and I never just let my car idle. Just stay off the go pedal when you are a few minutes away from your destination.

Wow, thought this thread was dead and gone. But yes, I just drive easy (my neighboors kids remind me to do so) the last mile or so and maybe idle 30 seconds.

So, my original understanding that Garretts don't need an exstensive cool down like old school turbos was correct then.

I have an EVo 8 with a gt35r garrett turbo.. just like the ones in my P car and both have water cooling. Its really a must in my opinion... thats why they have the water cooling option. My Evo tuner installed probably hundreds of garrett turbo kits and he water cools them all.
just my opinion.
