996 Engine Swap...Here's what I found out...
Backstory in case noone caught the earlier thread:
- lifter fix didn't take, mucho metal in the oil and the filter
- been doing research on the new engine...
Someone posted a 3.8 997s engine in the other thread for sale for $7100. I got all sorts of hell bent on having that put in. HOWEVER, after much research I found out this this is feasable BUT at a giant cost. On top of the engine you also need: DME, harness, some serious rewire, new airbox and a new exhaust. All in all that's about $13,000 - $15,000 in parts depending on what you have and if you can talk Porsche into taking you 3.4 core. Add about 50 hours of labor if its not something you do everyday and you're looking in the neighborhood of $17,500 to $20,000
Option two - the 996 3.6
This is probably what I am going to be going with. All you need is an engine and DME and they can be had for about $11,000. 25 more hp and from what I have read/heard a much better engine. You'll take a little hit on the core swap but I'm leaning this way. Install should be $14,000 - $15,000
Option 3 - the 996 3.4
Easy, cheapest, plug and play. Will I be going through this again in 4 years??
Install - $13,000 - $14,000
I'm meeting with the wrench tomorrow to go over all the final numbers and figure out which way to go. Wish me luck. I'll update the thread tomorrow afternoon to which direction we're heading. I'm giving them till July 18th to have it done (I have a trip to New Orleans and New York from July 11-July 18th) so one way or another in 3 weeks I will have the 911 back with a new engine WITH a warrenty. I hope they are done by July 11th so I can drop it off and get the Gt3 bumper put on!

FYI a reman 3.4L engine will use all the updated 3.6L parts. Will be just as reliable and probably nearly every bit as fast.....An engine install should take 2 days to do....its not that intense..Mine was done in 48 hours...from the time my car was dropped off to the time I picked it up....

Auto Strasse rebuilds 3.4 and all labor for about $6500 here in socal. They warrentee it for one year 12k miles. Maybe this might be cheaper option for you to ship your car here and have it done.

show me where I can get it rebuilt for $4000 and it's on
Auto Strasse can do it - $6500 for the rebuild, $1500 in shipping, $1500 to put it in - $9500. If I was in Socal this would be a no brainer but I see a lot of value in spending more money on an engine that has a nationwide warranty for two years. Clearly I know how to break 'em

Otherwise, you are correct about getting nationwide warranty for only a couple grand more.
Also, try to check a dealer in Oregon, They are selling the engine with porsche 2 yr warrantee for under $9000, I believe it was something like $8,600. Check out pelican part forum, that was were I found all my info.

Thanks for the update, I would have the engine bored out while it's not in the car. Using the 3.6L, either go to a 3.8L bore with 12.5:1 compression and be happy, or bore to a 3.8L and go with 9:1 compressions and slap some boost on it! Honestly you will probably spend an extra $3K to have it machined and it could pump out 40-50 additional hp rather easily. I'd go with an all motor set-up. Go with really good quality parts so the thing will hold up for a beating for a long time. You could have GT3 speed without having to spend all the money. Just my $.02, obviously you're already going to have to shell over a ton of money.

Nice idea swift but probably would void the warranty that he is going for. It also has been impossible to find a shop that overbores the M96 engines. He was looking for that when looking at rebuilding his 3.4

Newport, not to be picky, but the Porsche reman'd 3.4's do not have "all the 3.6L updated parts", it does not have the new IMS gears or chain, etc, because it is still Variocam, not Variocam Plus that the 3.6's are. It just has the newest rev of any part that is for the 3.4 and of course is truely handbuilt, so more carefully assembled, it seems. The Autofarm article outlines why they rebuild 3.4's the way they do, vs 3.6's.

Auto Strasse quoted me $6500 and $1000 - $1500 for install. One of the issues is that the engine came out, mechanic said it was lifters and it turned out to be much more serious now that the engine is back in the car. It's just a bummer of a situation and hopefully it'll all turn out positive in the end

If it were me, i would spend the extra money and install the 3.8L, assuming you wanted to keep the car stock (no supercharger) and the factory warranty. It's a hell of a lot more HP then the 3.4. That's just my opinion tho...
