Thanks. My probe tips are too large to get into the connector. I think I need to rig something with tiny wires to check the pins. I suspect that my ground connection isn't good. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have tested the iPod connector for charging before attaching it to the power/ground from the phone connector.

It was my ground wire. Unfortunately I tugged a little to hard and it came out of the clip. I think if I can remove and reinstall the clip, I'll be good to go.

I am mechanically inclined but have otherwise never done this before. I used the instructions from the B&M SSK which show how to disassemble/reassemble the rear console in combination with the iPorsche instructions. It took me about 6 hours to do. If I knew what I was doing, I'll bet I could have done it in less than 2 hours.
I dislike the FM integrations due to the low quality of sound and the high degree of interference -- especially on cross country trips.
With the direct link, I can get the most out of my music collection, which I've ripped to lossless audio in iTunes. The stock sound system sounds much better when listening to my iPod then listening to the radio.
I would guess that given the kit ($75) an installer could do the work for 2-3 hours worth of shop time for an install into the rear console. If you do it like Euclid has illustrated, it really is quite easy -- definitely a DIY.

I sure agree with you and with Zroad re the sound quality of the fm transmitter. Doesn't bother me too much because I only use the ipod for audio books. For music, the interface would be a mandatory addition. I rip the books using Markable 2. Thanks for the good info...

I have the changer installed and had no need to unplug the changer. The only issues I've had are that the NANO doesn't charge (think that was already a known thing) and my NEW iPhone doesn't work with it at all, which stinks!

In fact, you're the first case that I've heard of that required the changer to be disconnected as well.
What year is your car? Stereo options?

Can I ask why it can't be done on a 2004 996 model?

Your year model has a completely different/much more complex system.
