my car came with a short shifter (i can only assume, throws are very high effort, notchy and short). i've been wanting to replace it and was wondering if this would do the trick? has anyone done it before and is it simple to do?

Very interesting. This is the first I've heard of this. I have a B&M SSK, and like the short throw, but could live without it having such a notchy feel. It's a direct replacement?
direct replacement. just hook up the two cables and bolt on. the standard 996 and 997 shifters are interchangeable. only difference is the guts which is a large improvement over the 996 one. there is a great diy thread in here somewhere which showed me step by step how to do it. just don't move the shift lever (which moved the cables) after using the green guide clip when removing the unit. as long as you don't do that, it's an easy diy. 1-2 hrs.
I also went from the B&M to the 997 and like it a lot more. I don't know if it's an inch shorter, but it is very noticeable, and smoother than the 996 was. I couldn't take the B&M notchiness anymore. Comes with the positioner that holds the shifter in the right position to get the cables correct.

I also went from a short shifter to a 997. I love the fact that the notchyness went away. I cant even tell the throw difference I just notice how smooth.

I know that when I pulled the B&M out, and had the 997 in the carrier, I did some measurements and the reduction was about 15%, compared to the B&M 30%, but I never did an installed measurement to see the actual amount. I can easily believe it is easily 1" or more at the top of the shifter knob, they are so long. I'd love to get a shorter knob, like the flatter squarish one's I've seen, but $400 is just too crazy for me to spend on a shift knob. But then again, maybe with my overtime check next month, I mean I can always resell it for at least $250, if I sell the car, right?.....
