My odometer LCD is all dark/nt workingO. All the other displays are fine ... it was working just fine until abt an hour ago...Fuse maybe? The 108 degree heat?

The LCD may be fried, it happens. If it is you can buy another cluster on eBay that will have the odometer mileage of that cluster. You may consider using it as a replacement temporally and send your cluster out to be repaired, then switch them and sell the eBay one right back on eBay. It's an option.
The cluster is really easy to remove, 10 minute job.

No way its a fuse. In Scottsdale, Arizona there is Dick's Speedo that can replace the LCD if it has gone bad. I don't know what state you're in but there's got to be a shop that just does instrument repairs. Google it.
There have been quite a bit of posts over the years about the odometer LCD going dark, not to common a problem but it does happen and it can be repaired.
The instrument cluster stores the actual mileage for your 996. Replacements are all over eBay for $299 but they will read the mileage that came out of the car they were in. A speedometer shop can true it up for you if you can show them some documentation that shows the mileage if you replaced the cluster....Porsche Dealers can do it as well.

Any speedometer shop should have the ability. Likewise, I would take it to my shop. That's what they do (repair Porsches). They will either do it in house or send it to their speedo dude.

I think the part name is:999 631 304 90. The description says: Bulb with Socket Base Beige, 12V - 1.5W for Dashboard Instruments, Boxster/Boxster S 1997-00, 996 Carrera/Carrera 4 1999-01
The read on the dash cluster removal is here: http://boxsters.addr.com/hacks/cluster.htm

I think that if yours is at the clock - or far right as you are looking at the cluster then you need the black bulb. Your bulb would be bulb 3

Cool, there is hope.
My dash light started to go on & off about 4 weeks ago until it wouldn't go on anymore. I wasn't going to do anything because all else worked (exterior lights, speedo, clock) and I was thinking a big $ repair. A bulb I think I can do, I'll have to check it out.
