So I bought FVD 100 cell cats for my 996 C4S paired with headers and PSE. I also have the fab speed carbon comp. intake. I am about to buy the softronic tune if a tune is my only option. I have done softronic tunes on an 09 boxster S and my 07 cayman S so I'm familiar with it, but I've read there are some o2 options I might can look into.

Can I use o2 spacers to get my light out without a tune? If so, will it get rid of the roughness in the power band?

Has anyone done anything else to make the CEL go out without a tune? NO IM NOT GOING TO TAKE OUT THE BULB

I would assume the spacers would do the trick here, I might recommend the ones from maxspeed because they actually have precious metal in them.

Before you do anything, pull the codes that are causing your CEL and use that information to understand what is actually wrong. CELs get thrown for many reasons, only a few of which may be due to your cats.

Many auto parts chains will read your codes for you for free, or you can buy a Durametric and do it yourself.

 

Yeah, he's right. Go ahead and get the codes and post them here, we'll help. I doubt the roughness is caused by the cats, could be missing or a vacume leak.

 

Only code showing is insufficient catalyst. I ran the codes first. It's only rough occasionally like its getting a bit rich. I assumed it was the cats fault.

I did install 997 coil packs and all new plugs while I had the headers off too.

 

Then the spacers should work. I'd give maxspeed a call.

 

Are you sure about that? I thought they were just plain jane like any others. The alternative would be to just get some generic cheapos off eBay as most are just extended tubing or piping to move the O2 sensor away from the direct stream of the exhaust gasses. They both come in straight and L configurations for tight spots.

But honestly, I would spring for the ECU upgrade as you'll get back some of the low end power and torque that is often moved from having a cat bypass or high performance cats. Not only can you defeat the CEL light, you will most likely also get the throttle response remapped to provide better throttle response as well(eGas models).

I'm working with a vendor right now that is similiar to Softronics way of programming(programming at home through OBD without having to send in your ECU) at a fraction of the price. This vendor will also modify my map for free if needed after I take it to a dyno and if the AF's are off in anyway. Stay tuned...

Agreed, but no one guarantees no CEL so I was thinking these may work better? But in reality, who knows..

 

Yeah personally I would rather go the proven electronic route and get a my ECU modified and also get better throttle response and improved HP to boot.

By the time you get these since you have to get 4, you're gonna be at $200-260+ depending on configuration. IIRC generic ebay ones can be had for 1/10th the cost so the risk will be less if these don't work out. OP already has cel100 so he maybe able to get away with adding the generic ones. my $.02

 

Yeah, worth a shot. I agree about the tune but at that point you're talking $1000+ I think.
