Question Under the hood planning question

Hey all,

Recently, I just started to feel my clutch start to slip under moderate to heavy throttle in the higher rev ranges or upshifts under heavy load for a split second. I'm planning on replacing the clutch sometime in late October/early November when I winterize the car.

While I'm under there, pulling everything else out, what would you guys recommend that I replace or update, preventative maintenance included?

Just a little background about the car, it's an early 99 cab with 107K on the clock now. I bought it with 80K on the clock, a one owner in Phoenix. I bought it directly from Porsche of Scottsdale (he traded it in on a new one). Previous owner had the car serviced and only serviced at Scottsdale where the car was bought, yes the book is stamped and the dealer did the last major service when they took it in on trade at 80K. The clutch was quoted at being replaced at 48K for the major service.

I do not know about everything that Porsche does standard in their minor and major services. I'm just looking at putting a laundry list together of things that I could and or should do while I'm replacing the clutch myself.

Thanks!

Adam

Congrats on the new ride - she's lookin' good! From your description, it appears the service dept has been on top of the regular maintenance so there aren't a ton of items of concern.

One item that's received much attention of recent is the IMS bearing on these cars. Some choose to treat it as preventative and replace it while others choose not to as they do not hear any tell-tale sounds or simply don't feel necessary. But take a moment and read the write-up we produced with great info about:
IMS Bearing Replacement
Here's an excerpt:
During a routine clutch job, you can also simply remove the IMS cover and take a closer look at the bearing itself (lock and check the camshafts prior to removing the cover though—see instructions below). If the center shaft is wobbly, or the center of the bearing doesn’t spin freely, then it’s probably on its way to failure.

Beyond this, you can always check pads/rotors and shocks as well as take a look underneath for any oil or water leaks.

In the end though, have a blast driving it this summer!

AOS and IMS are good places to start with the list in addition to the clutch.

Let me ask another question, I have not heard of the need of replacing the tranny mount, why would one do this? I have heard of the need to replace the engine mounts as the rubber/cushion wears out on them.

IMS bearing
RMS seal
inspect the AOS, much easier to replace with the trans out
good time to replace the back-up sensor in the trans
upgrade the pin for 2nd gear pop-out (much easier with trans out of car)
Fuel filter (on '99 C2) is easier to get to with trans out

Same reason as the engine mount. It's rubber/cushion that deforms over time just like the engine mounts.
I had mine "repaired" at 105kish...I replaced it this time and the tranny mount did not look pretty at 155k+
When you drop the tranny, it's at the very front...see for yourself what condition yours is in

@GeeTee- Thanks for the heads up on the tranny mount, I was under the impression that it was a solid mount.

@WhiteOut- I didn't even realize some of those are more accessible with the tranny out. I'll have to dig into my guides and around on the forum more.
