Brake Question

Ok, a couple of questions:
Looking at my brakes, in front of the caliper there appears to be a bar that when the pads wear down will start rubbing the disc, what is that called? Also, how much space should be between that par and the disc? It also looks like there is a screw which when loosened would allow you to adjust the bar.
The reason I ask is because I was told I had 80% brake left but there is only about 1/8th an inch space but the pad itself seems to have a lot of usable pad left but this bar thing would ruin the disc.
I'm not sure how thick a new pad would be.

Thanks

Is it the wear sensor? I'm not sure what you mean. Maybe a pic would help...

I replaced my brake pads 3 weeks ago and do not recall seeing a bar ifo the calipers. There is a "bar", actually a retaining pin, that you tap out with a punch or screwdriver that goes thru the top hole of your brake pad. Take out the small pin retainers first making sure you don't damage them when removing.

Here's a video on brake removal on a 1999 C4. Brake pad/rotor removal should be identical thru 2003.

sk2929 is on a distinguished road
maybe that bar is the vibration dampers - should be two rod/bar like things at the top and bottom of the pad.

I think it's the retaining pin, I'll try to get a pic.

Thanks
