Shifter does not always engage reverse gear

Lately when I try to go in reverse the shifter does not engage reverse but if I try a few time it engages. All the other gears have no problem.

Before you put it in reverse, try double clutching, sounds like a sinc problem.
Are the other gears notchy? If so your motor mounts could be bad.

No the other gears are good. I thought maybe it is the gear box so I figured I can upgrade to a 997 shifter and hopefully that would resolve my problem so I bought one and replaced it but still having the problem. I played with linkage adjustment which seem to help some time but can't get it reliable.

You could have a leaky clutch slave cylinder and/or air in the line. Common to have to pump the clutch before reverse will engage smoothly.

Look at your slave cylinder to see if you see any leaks visually and go from there.

I finally took it in to a local mechanic and the problem was the blue transmission wire linkage at the transmission side under the car was loose. He adjusted it and now it works perfectly.

I know, first I though it was the shifter so I replaced it with a 997 shifter but that was't it. At least I got an upgraded shifter out of it.
