'03 911 or '06 Boxster S?
Both at $28 at different dealerships.
911: 65k miles
Boxster S: 23k miles
I'm leaning towards 911 though I worry that is it out of warranty. Is it still a better buy since 911 has longevity? Open to feedback based on your experience.

Two completely different vehicles. No real comparison. One roadster, one not. One back seat, the other not. One has one trunk one has two..... Both are extremely fun to drive. YOU have to drive both and see which one you like best. They are not similar enough to pick one based on age or options.

Pmama.. +) ..yes 911 is TOTALLY DIFFERENT and always to me a better choice.
I have a Basalt Black ( best color ever!) 02 C4s, fairly modded but super fun and clean will be selling come spring time or in the next few months..just a little above your price, but a very valuable piece !

I'd go with a 911 too.
When I bought my C4S, I also considered a new Boxster. It was a very nice car, and it was really fun to drive. As noted above, it was a very different driving experience.

What an awesome wife! Better take these replies with a grain of salt, because this is the 911 forum. You are comparing two very different Porsches - which one does he like better? Can you ask in a subtle way which he would prefer? I've owned 7 911s and one Boxster, here's how I see it.
Boxster - newer, lower mileage, more updated 987 bodystyle, 987 reliability improvements that the older 996 doesn't have, convertible, only two seats, better MPG, more trunk space (there are two), similar performance, better balanced handling, stigma of being the entry level Porsche, years down the road will probably be worth less money.
911 - an aspirational and legendary car, back seats, more character, unique and fun handling characteristics, more attractive styling (my opinion), has some reliability issues that should be addressed (if they haven't been already), higher mileage so insure that ALL maintenance is up to date.
The Boxster is a LOT of car for the money. Both are great, there really isn't a right/wrong decision.

the 911 will have more "wow" as a gift i would think but with 65K on the clock it might need some work done . The boxster S is a 987 with only 23k . Just get in and drive that one . I own a 986 S boxster and A 911 C2 cab . I really have to say you can not go wrong with either . If it is a first time Porsche purchase I would go with the Boxster S .

Thank you all for the thoughtful responses. I grew up driving Mustangs and he lame granny machines. I bought him an Audi A4 for homecoming (from deployment) and 90k miles later, still fun to drive. I drove the standard Boxster and felt sluggish compared to cayman S. A toe tap on the cayman and I was flying. Once the snow clears, I'll tryout the Boxster S- hoping the extra hp will change my mind. In the meantime, I left a deposit on the 911 to hold.
Re: maintenance, I'm trying to keep costs low now so we won't be set back for a turbo. He will be finished w residency so I'm calculating a turbo in 2-3 years. A few of you have made a good point that in the long run, 911 will be valued more and possibly run longer than Boxster. It may last for the kids to enjoy too.

I too looked at an 08 Boxster and a 04 C4S Cab. Got the cab and have never had as much fun, received more envious looks and great comments. Sure it's 10 years old and I knew that going into this. Be prepared to spend a few more dollars after purchase to make it totally right, you won't regret it when you see a Boxster coming down the road.
