Sticky shifter on my 996 Tiptronic

I have a 2003 C4S Tip. When I'm taking my car out of park, the shifter seems to stick and doesn't want to pull down unless I apply a lot more force than should be required. Now after I initially get it out of park, it is fine shifting it in & out of park until after I've parked it and its been sitting for a little while. I did have a leaky soda cup from the drive through in the cup holder the other day and I'm thinking possibly it dripped down and got in there. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it likely the "soda theory" or is there a known issue that can develop that is affecting my car now? I'm thinking about trying to spray some WD-40 in there.

W40 is not a lube. Do yourself a favor and pick a real lubricate.
