Finally made my decision in regards to the IMS issue
So, I bought my 03 996 C4S Tip in May. The car had 42k miles, a clean Car Fax, and was recently serviced. It was an impulsive buy. I was thinking "Hey, it's a Porsche! I can make this my daily driver and get 300k miles easy out of this car!" Then I got a class action lawsuit letter in the mail, did a little research, and became mortified. I know I should have done more research before buying the car, but I never imagined a company like Porsche could screw up so bad. That being said, I have spoken to the Porsche dealer, and many independent shops specializing in German auto repair in the LA area. I have gotten many different opinions and price quotes for resolution. I have heard everything from the early 996s are less likely to have failure because of them having a double bearing to the opposite...(Oh, they had it straightened out by 03!)...umm yeah. I've heard that it only happens to 5% of the cars to it will eventually happen to every 996...it's just a matter of time. I've gotten refit kits quotes from $2200-$6200. I've heard the stock bearing has an average life of 40k miles and the aftermarket bearing will last 60k miles. I got 2 quotes from one mechanic...$4200 that will be good for 50k miles and $6200 for a kit that is good for the life of the car. I notice lots of mechanics want to do other "updates" while they are in there. I finally decided to just buy a Power Train Warranty through Easy Care for 4 years/ 50k miles. This is the last year that my car qualifies for extended warranty due to easy care only goes back 11 model years. The warranty cost came in a near what my lowest refit quote was. I figure it will cover my entire drivetrain and the refit would be spending $ on 1 problem that may never happen. By the time the warranty is up, I'll probably be looking to upgrade to at least a 997 or if I decide to keep my 996, I'll spend the money for the kit then. I did look into it, and if the IMS failed under warranty, I would get a new engine. Anyway...that's my decision. Just figured I'd share it for anyone else in the same shoes to think about.

I just bought the basic PowerCare. Having the engine is covered was my only really big concern and it covers the power train.

My dealer also sells aftermarket warranty for power train. What they don't tell you is that you are limited at $4000 per visit. Make sure you check the fine print. Not saying yours is like that just a heads up.

I took a quick look at the sample contract http://easycare.com/pdf/GoldApp9-20-2012.pdf on the EasyCare site and do not see any specific IMS exclusions or per visit coverage cap.

I bought a 3 year bumper to bumper extended warranty from the dealer when I got my 01 996.
Like you, it was the price of a full refit ( clutch AOS, RMS and solution) yet covers it all
I'll renew it for another 3 years which covers me until 2019.
Then I'll deal with it.
Because I'm tired of worrying and I already paid for a massive warranty.
