I had this about 4 months ago, got it trailered to the dealer and it turned out to be a hydraulic valve that dumped its oil, and pumped back up after he engine ran for a few mins. However a big chat to mechanic alerted me to a few things:
1. When the IMS go on the motorway, by the time you get off the road the engine is lunched
2. They have had them go noisy like this with no load on engine and salvaged the engine
3. Not starting it and trailering to the dealer is the right way to go, not starting it etc

Just curious, was the sound only present at idle or was it clanking at all rpms?

Just going through this tread, I knew by the symptoms it was the water pump. My 04 did the same a few months ago. IMS is a very rare failure on the 03-04 cars. Let us know when you do get around to doing the IMS what kinda shape it's in. IMHO there are a lot of IMS being replaced out there that are perfectly fine.
