An update gents: BOTH family ride and husband's DD are on a flatbed!
So much for the SUV lively discussions. It's only going to get interesting.... I caught him drooling over an R8. My search is on hold for now.

Acura MDX with the Tech package. Reliable, great in winter (AWD and Blizzaks), fairly nimble for its size, and does pretty much everything well enough not to be annoying. Also relatively cheap, at least by X5/GL standards.

We have a VW Touareg V10 TDI with a few mods that make it far more desirable to me than the Cayenne Turbo we had previously. The problem for you is no third row.
If I were you, I would look into a police spec Tahoe. They are all the rage in Texas but are 2WD. Maybe, you can check the right boxes at a Chevrolet store and end up with a pretty satisfying SUV. I don't know if you really can get a properly spec'd Tahoe, as I haven't set foot in a Chevy dealer in 5 or 6 years, and that was just to pickup a friend. The police seem to love them.

Suggestions were based on models that drove and handled like cars with a 3rd row requirement, or else any of the large suv's including the ones you suggested would've sufficed.

I supposed handling like a car would be, "feel, responsiveness, and power" but there are vast differences in any large SUV.

Very nice and yes I'm jealous. I've always wondered if there are any crash data from a rear end collision in the third row from NHSTA.

Honestly, I took a short break from researching since spring and soccer season kicked off. Thoroughly enjoying this gorgeous weather. Smallest fry's first time with wind in his face.

I haven't seen the BMW wagon on any lot. Do you have pics of the interior?
